The AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60 feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

iPod, iPod mini
08/13/2004 07:17 AM
Griffin Technology has introduced RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the 1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

Prie Hook, which will ship in mid-January for US$54, features a large metal hook that you can use to attach the leather case to a belt loop or other spot. A flap at the bottom opens for charging the MP3 player in a dock; slots at the top and bottom allow access to all the ports. It's available in two models, one that fits all 4G iPods -- including the iPod photo -- and one that fits the iPod mini; the hook on the latter doesn't swivel 360 degrees, however.

SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.

mini-02.jpg imageAs eagle-eyed reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

2006 Chevy HHR

iPod users will find it easier to take their favorite tunes on the road thanks to a new family of radios that will debut on the Chevy HHR and other GM vehicles starting later this year. The new radios will include an auxiliary channel and front mounted auxiliary input jack, so that an iPod or other audio source can be easily plugged in and played through the vehicle audio system.

Radios featuring the new auxiliary input jack will debut starting in late spring. They will be standard equipment on 2006 models of the Chevy HHR, Impala and Monte Carlo; Saturn VUE and ION; Pontiac Solstice; Buick Lucerne; and Cadillac DTS. The radios will be fitted to other new GM models over the next several years.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

How Not To Price

How Not To Price 05/13/2004 09:23 PM
While the mainstream press picks up on the (boring) obvious story that Six Apart has released version 3.0 of their popular Movable Type blogging tool, they seem to be missing out on the bigger story: the pricing structure they set up is being almost universally trashed by loyal Mova ble Type Users. I've never used Movable Type so I have no opinion one way or the other on the software or whatever they decide to charge for it. However, it seems that they've screwed up one of the most basic rules in pricing: never take away features and charge for them. You can charge for new features - but taking away features that were included for free before always pisses off your most loyal customers. They feel suckered. They feel like you've pulled a bait and switch on them. In this case, many MT users set up multiple blogs with multiple authors. That's what the software encouraged them to do. Now, they're looking at the pricing and realizing to continue doing so on the new platform would cost them around $600. "Costs more for doing less" isn't a way to make users happy. One other rule of pricing: recognize the competition. There are an awful lot of blogging tools out there, and more are coming out every day. Not all of these are free, and people clearly pay to use certain tools. However, ignoring competitive pricing (as Six Apart appears to have done, since the prices they're offering are well above the competition) doesn't make much sense - especially when the switching costs really aren't that high. Anyway, it looks like Six Apart has gone into damage control mode, trying to explain that this is just a "developer release." However, they (of all people) should have known how their users would respond to this offering.

The Price of Perfection

The Price of Perfection 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Joel on Software - Thursday, April 22, 2004: Joel makes some good points about how we programmers have a tendency to try make things perfect beyond any practical benefit. He's touched on this before as well, with a story about the Netscape refactoring.

Perfectionism is a very dangerous quality in business and in life, because by being perfectionist about one thing you are, by definition, neglecting another.

The three days I spent insuring that all icons in CityDesk 3.0 are displayed with perfect alpha-blended effects came at the price of having a web site where the descender of the "g" is not a hyperlink. And both are at the price of working on my next book, or writing another article for Joel on Software, or making CityDesk publish really big sites faster.
