History of the Laptop

History of the Laptop

History of the Laptop 03/23/2005 12:46 PM

imb_flkja8.jpgChris Null over at Mobile PC Mag does another great follow up to his Top 100 Gadgets of All Time, this time detailing the history of the portable computer, from the IBM 5100 Portable Computer pictured here, up to the first modern laptops. It's a tear-jerker for those of us who lived through this era, seeing old friends like the Compaq luggable (mine had more wonky than usual floppy drives) and catching a glimpse of a few I'd not known about.

It also inspired me to keep on with my current tinkering project goal (which let me tell you, is way beyond my limited abilities): getting an Epson HX-20 laptop online via serial cable -> IR -> cellphone. Of course, I've got to buy a working HX-20 first, and every time I mention it on here, you bastards go out and outbid me on all the eBay sales. Stop that.

Weaning off laptop

Weaning off laptop 06/19/2004 06:10 AM

I have been using laptops primarily for the past few years and now I am planning to return to desktops.  Why?  Because laptops are difficult to upgrade and I am tired of paying too much to replace broken parts or batteries dying over time.  The control key on my current laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8000, is sticky and I can't fix it without sending my laptop off.  Fans (yup, it has two) and hard drives turning on and off is annoying too.

I have been eyeing the 17-inch PowerBook but Windows is my primary target environment so I can't just replace my laptop with the PowerBook.  So I am going to get a desktop, not the most powerful one available, but one that hits the Sweet Spot.  I think that means 3.2 GHz Pentium 4.  So far I am looking at Dell Dimension 8300 with 2 gig of memory, 400G disk.  Since I am addicted to 1600x1200 resolution and LCD (read ClearType), I'll have to get one of those 20-inch LCD and match that with Radeon 9800 GPU.  Even with fastest optical drives (CD/DVD-RW), total cost is around $2400 which is pretty good deal I think.

Only problem is that the price keeps dropping.  Longer I hold off on getting it, the cheaper it gets.  It's amazing that with such a strong incentive not to press the submit button, the computer industry still humms along.  How crazy is that?

After I finish making the transition to the desktop, maybe I'll get the PowerBook (why the heck does it support only 1440x900?) with the excuse that I'll be writing some OS X software.  At least that's the line I am going to use on my wife.  OS X software market is going to explode, honey!

Purchase now for £12.99 and they'll get it to you in 28 days or less -- or the next one is the same price. May or may not be used to calculate the value of pi. (Thanks, Dave!)

The Walmart Laptop

The Walmart Laptop 08/17/2004 09:00 PM

Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Walmart puts out an ultra-cheap laptop for under $600. It's an ECS A535, and comes with an Athlon 1.6GHz processor, 14" screen, wireless networking, and XP Home Edition.

As expected, Walmart continues its push of cheap imports with little regard for anything but its own bottom line.

I guess it's good for the US economy in one respect; cheap hardware like this will undoubtedly keep support guys plenty busy. And at that price you might as well buy two; one for a backup or for spare parts.

Is That A Laptop Or A Phone?

Is That A Laptop Or A Phone? 02/19/2004 11:28 AM
Intel is now pushing computer makers to build phones directly into laptops. At first, I wondered why this was necessary, since it's easy enough to install a softphone - but they're actually talking about the hardware aspect. The idea is that on the cover of the laptop, you'd have a screen and phone buttons, and the system could be used even if the computer was in sleep mode. Initially, the phone would be a VoIP phone, but they also want to add cellular service. The screen also will integrate with some email programs so you could check your email without opening up the computer. While this certainly has a novelty factor, I wonder how big a market there really is for such things. Most people who would be remotely interested in this have a mobile phone already. Are they really going to be that interested in adding additional phone service just for their computer? Also, the way this offering is described, it sounds like it's only really useful if the laptop is closed.

When I go on the road my laptop has a 40 Gig drive but that is just not enough and I carry a 60 Gig Firewire external just to have all of my data with me. Finally someone has developed a 100 gig 2.5 inch hard-drive. Time will tell how these will perform. Japanese techies are going to get a shot at them first but they will not be cheap. [Engadget]
