Unconfirmed: T-Mobile Gives Danger
Security Deadline
03/23/2005 12:46 PM

hilton_sknix.jpgA source near T-Mobile's high level security teams has informed Gizmodo that the carrier has given an informal ultimatum to Danger, the company that produces the hit Sidekick and Sidekick II. The problem isn't the device itself, but the security of the backend servers, which Danger also manages. If the security issues plaguing the platform are not fixed, says our source, T-Mobile intends to stop selling the Sidekick.

Although the security issues on the Sidekick platform are far from a new development, the Paris Hilton Sidekick Hack made it a much more prominent issue (and ironically, increased Sidekick sales). We've been told that T-Mobile has limited Danger's access to T-Mobile customer data to a bare minimum in an attempt to mitigate any possible future leaks.

Danger could not be reached for comment, but it's also the wee hours of the morning in California, so no foul. We hope to confirm this information as soon as possible, since it could affect not only Danger, but all users of the Sidekick platform.

Update: We've been informed that the date of the security ultimatum is July 1st, 2005.

Unconfirmed: T-Mobile Treo 650 Soon? 04/12/2005 07:44 AM

treo_650.jpgReader Nick J writes in with this little blip about a surprise yesterday.

"Hey joel, not sure if this is news, but t-mobile sent my company 3 treo 650s as a thank-you for renewing a bunch of cell phone accounts. i hadn't heard anything official about t-mobile supporting treo 650, but this is clear evidence."

Anyone else heard anything concrete about this?

T-Mobile Apologizes For Danger Outage...
But Not To Me

T-Mobile Apologizes For Danger Outage...
But Not To Me
03/22/2005 10:07 PM
A few weeks back we noted that all users of the Danger Hiptop/T-Mobile Sidekick had no data service for about a week, for some unknown reason. While service was eventually restored, the outage has still not been adequately explained (though, it probably made Paris Hilton happy). As an "apology," T-Mobile sent all Sidekick users a note promising a $20 credit and a special folder of "free" games and ringtones in a folder labeled "Thank You" on the catalog part of the device. Seeing as I'm a Sidekick user, I checked out the catalog. I use the Sidekick only for data, so all of the free ringtones were useless to me (I wouldn't use them anyway, even if I did use it as a phone). However, there were two games offered, and considering the lameness of the existing games on the device, I figured why not at least get something out of this free offering. For the past few days I've been trying to download the free games, and every time I'm told they're not available. I finally called up T-Mobile and after waiting on hold for a while and having to speak to two different representatives, I was told that these games don't work on my particular Sidekick model and, yes, T-Mobile should have filtered the emails and the catalog better and, yes, the error message should have told me that these games weren't compatible and, yes, they probably should have offered at least some games that would work on my Sidekick, but otherwise, too bad. Their only suggestion was to call up Danger Inc., and see if maybe they would do something for me. I can certainly survive without two free games, but it does seem particularly rude to offer a special free "thank you," but make it so it wasn't actually available to many of your users. It's sort of a "thank you, but screw you" response. Amusingly, the catalogue clearly labels this as "customer appreciation week." I don't feel particularly appreciated right now.

Speaking of FCC leaks, looks like the Sidekick II -- note the T-Mobile 'Sidekick' branding, and not 'Hiptop' -- is approved for FCC use, which means among other things pictures and user manuals have been revealed. It looks similar to the unit we posted a few months ago, but it looks like the camera on the back might include a flash, to which we say with no shame at all, "Oh, snap!" (Okay, maybe a little shame). Go ahead and dig around on the FCC site and see what you can find and we'll do the same. Let's just hope and pray that camera is 1-megapixel plus.

This is far from an official word, but PSP Takeover is reporting that Sony is providing free replacement PSPs for those who have two or more dead pixels (well, free plus shipping). Sony's US customer support isn't open yet (8AM PST), but we'll try to give them a ring later in the day to see what's up.

Nintendo was replacing any DS with a dead pixel, not two or more, so hopefully Sony will meet that challenge.
