Apple Finalizes iDisk WebDAV Migration
Apple Finalizes iDisk WebDAV Migration
11/06/2003 12:20 PMIn an email to .Mac members, Apple has announced that on December 2,
2003, iDisks will have coverted completely to WebDAV protocol. This
means that OS 9 users will no longer be able to use the Finder to
connect but will instead need to use a third party WebDAV client. OS X
has WebDAV capabilities built in, so OS X users should notice no
change.
On December 2, affected users (those using OS 9) will be able to
download files from the iDisk but will not be able to upload. On
Janary 20, 2004, however, the only protocol that will access the iDisk
will be WebDAV and all OS 9 access will need to be with a WebDAV
client.
Goliath is a free, open-source WebDAV client, and is recommended by
Apple for those who are still running OS 9.

08/19/2004 06:34 PMThis morning we linked to a New York Times story on the resignation of
Deal Hudson, the Bush campaign adviser and point man on Catholic
voters who is also publisher of the conservative Catholic journal
Crisis. Hudson stepped down ahead of an investigative profile being
penned about him in a Catholic publication. The piece by the National
Catholic Reporter's Joe Feuerherd has now been published, and it's a
doo
zy. Maybe now Hudson will stop lecturing people about morals and
calling on U.S. clergy to denounce John Kerry "whenever and wherever
he campaigns as a Catholic" because he doesn't agree with the Vatican
on everything.

iPod + HP = No big deal
iPod + HP = No big deal
08/28/2004 11:08 AMWhen Apple and Hewlett Packard teamed up in January to create and
HP-branded version of the iPod, I, like so many others, was intrigued
by the possibilities. For one, the pact represented the first of its
kind for Apple and pushed the limits of cloning and imitating — here
wasn’t a mere replica, it was a slightly modified version of the real
thing. Secondly, at a time when the iPod was just beginning to take
off, and the iPod mini was merely a preorder in hundreds of thousands
of Inboxes, a partnership with a major distributor had far-reaching
promise for both investors in the States and consumers overseas.
Plus, it was blue.
But now that it's here, it seems that the Apple iPod from HP, as it's
been officially dubbed, doesn’t offer much in the way of prospect.
Like a rookie who pitched his best game in preseason play, the new
incarnation of the iPod seems like dead weight for Apple, while HP can
ride the bench and collect its bloated paycheck.
Granted, the HP Tattoos are pretty cool, but they do little to enhance
the overall iPod experience — nor does the new packaging, USB 2.0
recommendation or Windows-like set-up poster. As far as I can tell,
the iPod itself is identical to Apple’s offering, released five weeks
later and in a new box.
And it's white.
I mean, didn’t Dell sell iPod last year? I fail to see how this is
much different.
Apparently, investors agree, as Apple’s stock dropped slightly, HP’s
shares creeped up somewhat, and what was eagerly anticipated just 24
hours earlier turned into all hype and no substance.
So, HP is selling iPods with its name engraved on the back… big deal.
Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe I’m just being cynical, but I
just don’t see the point. Now, Apple is making less per unit, and
stands to lose brand recognition to HP. Selling the same iPod in a
different box just doesn’t seem to offer anything positive for Apple.
It all seemed so promising nearly eight months ago, but after more
than a million sales, new stores, new models and a cover article in
Newsweek, there doesn’t seem to be much punch behind the HP launch.
It could be me, but I think the iPod is one thing Apple should keep to
itself.

U.S. Government Spurned Peace Talks Before the War With Iraq -

guarded compound in Baghdad in the days before the war, ABCNews has
been told, but a top former Pentagon adviser says he was ordered not
to pursue the deal, ABCNews has learned.
Baghdad Scrambled to Offer Deal to U.S.
as War Loomed -
As American soldiers massed on the Iraqi
border in March and diplomats argued about war, an influential adviser
to the Pentagon received a secret message from a Lebanese-American
businessman: Saddam Hussein wanted to make a deal. Iraqi officials,
including the chief of the Iraqi Intelligence Service, had told the
businessman that they wanted Washington to know that Iraq no longer
had weapons of mass destruction, and they offered to allow American
troops and experts to conduct an independent search. The businessman
said in an interview that the Iraqis also offered to hand over a man
accused of being involved in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993
who was being held in Baghdad. At one point, he said, the Iraqis
pledged to hold elections. The Yin, the Yang and the Deal
