Wi.Ser 0.6.8 (Default branch)
Wi.Ser 0.6.8 (Default branch)
03/28/2005 01:34 PM

Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework
which enables an application to run as either a
monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing app,
or as a Web app without any change. It includes a
mixed deployment mode, which supports one server to serve Swing
clients and Web clients at the same time. The framework uses XML to
define an application's GUI. It provides a common
widget-based, object-oriented programming
interface for Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents
the developer from struggling with HTML and HTTP
or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server applications
the client/server split as well as the client/server communication is
handled transparently by the framework.
The project includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's
functionality (screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).
Changes:
This release implements lazy loading for swing
widgets, which means that forms are submitted on
demand from the server to the client. This feature
brings a significant speed up for swing GUIs and a
lower memory footprint. A bug in forEach has been
fixed, and forEach is able to match names and tags
with regular expressions. The tutorial has been
enhanced with two new chapters, and errors in the
WebWindow management were corrected. A new widget
called templateSection has been added to support
embedded HTML.

g4u ("ghost for unix") is a boot-floppy/CD that allows one to easily
clone PC hard disks by using FTP. This is often done to deploy a
common setup on a number of PCs. The floppy/CD offers two functions:
it uploads the compressed image of a local hard disk to an FTP server,
and then it can retrieve that image via FTP, uncompress it, and write
it back to disk. Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the
hard disk is processed as an image, any filesystem and operating
system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well
as partitions is also supported.

limit. The speed of the show_queue dialog was

DBG 2.11.32 (Default branch)
02/01/2005 09:44 PM

DBG is a PHP debugger and profiler. It makes it much easier to
discover the origins of problems and bugs in PHP scripts. It's
equipped with the ability to backtrace errors. It shows local and
global variables as well as parameters which have been passed to all
nested function calls at any point of execution. Among other things,
it allows you to execute scripts in a step-by-step manner, set
breakpoints (including conditional ones), evaluate expressions, and
watch variables. The profiler allows you to find bottlenecks in PHP
code at the functions level as well as the modules level and even the
source lines level.
Changes:
This release adds support for hardened PHP, and support for PHP 5.0.3,
5.0.2, 4.3.9, and 4.3.10. It adds three new commands to dbg-cli:
-list, -listen, and -output. It also fixes problems with the PCRE

the directories were fixed. Temporary files are
now compressed using gzip.
otl 0.26 (Default branch)
otl 0.26 (Default branch)
04/08/2005 04:27 AM
otl is a Perl application that is a glorified
search and replace engine. The process is
customizable; the application can be used to
generate markup such as HTML, XML, etc. from a
text file with the user able to customize the
process to a substantial extent. While the program
is designed to be used to process outlines (e.g.
lecture notes, etc.) and generate nice HTML, it
could be used in other contexts, as well by just
defining a new set of rules for the substitution
process.
Changes:
In this version, nested lists are processed better, and there
is improved documentation in the HOWTO . A GNU autoconf
automake framework was added so install is more of a no-
brainer, a --pfile flag is now used to indicate a parameter
file, filename globbing is now dealt with, the parameter file
was modified so it specifies the file suffix to tag on output
file, diagnostic information that is written to stdout has been
trimmed, the project now checks to see if the file is already
present before overwriting, and a second script, "tag-
remove", was added.

04/14/2004 06:26 AMOSVDB - OPen Source Vulnerability Databasehttp://www.osvdb.org/OSVDB is an independent and open source database created by and for
the security community. The goal of the project is to provide
accurate, detailed, current, and unbiased technical information on
security vulnerabilities. The project will promote greater, more open
collaboration between companies and individuals, eliminate redundant
works, and reduce expenses inherent with the development and
maintenance of in-house vulnerability databases. This will be added to
Security Resources
2004 Internet MiniGuide.

Database vendors are joining the open

Database vendors are joining the open
source party
12/22/2004 01:44 AMWhether companies sell or provide their databases with fully available
source code, through a new open source project, or with their very own
open source license, there is definitely open source fever in the
database business these days. Older, established database makers such
as IBM, Sybase, and CA are releasing the code for what were previously
proprietary products. But these players are coming late to the party
thrown by MySQL, PostgreSQL, BerkelyDB maker Sleepycat, and Firebird.
How much open source beer are these newcomers bringing to the database
bash, or are they simply coming in and asking where the cups are?

CA Moves
with New Open-Source Licensing for Content, Database Projects.
This article has some dangerous flaws. Proprietary/open source
dual-licensing can be done with the GPL; just look at
MySQL. (I see
the Plone Foundation themselves
are fighting this bad reporting.) Also, Apache is not
dual-licensed and IBM could have used it just as easily if it wasn't
owned by the ASF, because the
Apache License
is so permissive. (Also, companies that create gratuitous new open
source licenses are not on the Cluetrain, but at least it's not
dangerous.)

Databases: Helen Borrie on the Future of Firebird: Here's an
interesting interview with one of the people behind Firebird, an emerging
open-source, multi-platform database server.
It's a fork of a mature commercial database called
InterBase. InterBase is an enterprise-level database — Firebird
is the same, but better. You'll find Firebird behind a number of Web
sites, storing records for telecom companies and managing data for
point-of-sales systems — just about anywhere you might find
Oracle or [Microsoft] SQL Server.
Firebird, you may remember, was the reason that the Mozilla browser
project had to change its
name to Firefox.
