Vancouver tech businesses on special
this week: Flickr and SchemaSoft
03/22/2005 11:44 PM
Two Vancouver-based companies have made the news this week for being purchased by large technology firms. The first to announce was the purchase of Flickr by Yahoo. Flickr is the photo-sharing service we use to bring you many of our news story images and the random photos you see in the right margin. The company's blog states that, "It means that we'll no longer have to draw straws to see who gets paid... Flickr will be continuing on the path it's on -- to Flickr 1.0 and beyond. We'll be working with a bunch of people that Totally Get Flickr and want to preserve the community and the flavor of what is here."

Sure, that's kinda what Bungie said when Microsoft bought them.

The other acquisition was by Apple itself in its purchase of SchemaSoft. The software company, which currently has its headquarters in Vancouver, is best known for developing tools that aid various software in translating rival file formats.

I wonder why Apple would want to translate rival file formats.

SchemaSoft had also been a Visual Studio.NET Integration Partner since 1999, and worked with Microsoft to build parts of the .NET framework and the .NET services used by Microsoft itself.

I guess they won't be doing that so much anymore. Let the rumors fly.

The Mad Canadian

A man and his rocket car. As documentaries enjoy an unprecedented level of popularity and financial success, it's high time that an obscure Canadian National Film Board doc from 1981 was (re)discovered. The story of Ken Carter, who spends several years and millions of dollars of other people's money in the single-minded pursuit of one goal: jumping a jet-powered car across the St. Lawrence River from Canada to the United States. What is it with Canadians and insane dreams?

Canadian M&Ms

Canadian M&Ms 03/24/2005 08:27 PM
Seems that Canadian collector’s are once more in for a treat, and I don’t mean because we’ll be eating more M&M’s in the next month than most people do in a lifetime. Unlike the American equivalents, It looks like we won’t have to go out to find all Seventy-six different packaging variations to get a complete set, at least judging by the lack of a ‘Collect All 76!’ type of message on the bags. Judging by image above that Canadian collector extraordinaire Scott Bradley sent us, our assortment also lacks the foil that makes the American counterpart shiny and desirable, but with the bilingual text and alternate character placement the Canadian M&M’s have their own reasons to shine!
