ESB market heats up

ESB market heats up 04/30/2004 12:00 PM
Once a lone voice in the wilderness extolling the virtues of Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technology, Sonic Software now finds itself with lots of company. The idea of ESBs is to offer a standards-based integration platform that brings together service-oriented architectures (SOAs), messaging, Web services, and XML with a distributed deployment model. Perhaps the most vocal evangelist for this technology has been Gordon Van Huizen, Sonic's CTO, who has played a central role in developing his company's flagship product. Van Huizen recently spoke with InfoWorld Editor At Large Ed Scannell about the still evolving competitive nature of the ESB market and where his company's technology fits in between the offerings of IBM and Microsoft's still off-in-the-distance Indigo technology, which will be stitched into Longhorn.

Music player market heats up

Music player market heats up 03/19/2005 03:27 AM
Digital music players have exploded into the mainstream market with Apple leading the pack, offering some of the most pricey players available. After introducing the iPod in 2001, Apple has become the digital music market leader, currently holding 80% of the market in the United States. Pew Internet & American Life Project in February found that about a quarter of people with household incomes of $75,000 or more owned digital music players but only 6 percent owned the devices among those earning less than $30,000. "iPods and MP3 players are becoming a mainstream technology for consumers" Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project said. "More growth in the market is inevitable as new devices become available, as new players enter the market, and as new social uses for iPods/MP3 players become popular." Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. The introduction of the shuffle was a change from Apple's regular iPod price tag, with the device selling for less than $100. This price breakthrough for Apple allows those have been seeking a lower price point to purchase one of the sought-after iPods while still maintaining a bank account balance. A recent surge of iPod clones have been tossed into the market, confusing iPod desirers with their similar names and looks. A Taiwan-based maker of digital audio products, Luxpro, introduced its Super shuffle digital music player at the CeBIT conference in Germany last week. Luxpro's Super shuffle is nearly identical to Apple's iPod shuffle measuring in at nearly the same size but, unlike Apple's iPod shuffle, it offers a voice recorder and FM tuner. The company even had iPod silhouette-style advertising to promote the device around the show. Another Asian company, Orient Expert Technology Co., Ltd., introduced an iPod-copied device called IPOD Mini. Like Apple's iPod mini, the Orient Expert IPOD has a 4 GB hard drive but offers an optional FM tuner. With the market finding more competition, even if it is among direct clones of the iPod, prices in the market are dropping with the introduction of competitive devices offering additional features, at a lower price. With this in mind, Apple may have to consider offering additional features and lower prices to stay at the head of the game.
