MVPs keep bashing competition of
Microsoft (Linux, Symbian) and cajoling
users to get Microsoft products
01/28/2004 01:31 PMApparently Microsoft MVPs not only are helping users of Microsoft
products, but are also officially bashing Microsoft´s competition:
Robert Levy says that Windows Mobile from Microsoft is better than
Linux, because operators will earn less money with Linux (and thus
forgets one important factor: users don´t like to part with their
money very much): Linux is proclaiming "Pick me! I´ll decrease your
costs!" while Microsoft is getting right to the heart of the matter by
boasting "Pick me! I´ll increase your revenue." One offers to cut the
cost of each device by a few dollars. The other offers to increase the
amount of money customers pay to their carrier each month by a few
dollars. This doesn´t sound like a very difficult decision to me.

Symbian
03/22/2005 03:49 PM Symbian, a maker of operating systems for cell phones, has
licensed software from rival Microsoft, in a sign of growing
cooperation between the two companies.
Symbian, based in London, said it will develop software that lets
Symbian phones work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 e-mail,
calendar, contacts and other personal-information tools, then make it
available to Symbian licensees. Licensing terms were not disclosed.
Both companies say the deal is meant to help sell more
Symbian-based
phones to corporate clientele. These handsets are known as smart
phones because they have advanced capabilities such as word
processing. Symbian is closely aligned with the smart-phone plans of
Fujitsu and Nokia. Nokia is a part owner of Symbian.

Microsoft Licenses Exchange Client for
Symbian
03/22/2005 04:46 PMLast year during the launch of the Treo 650, one of the overlooked
bits of news was that the mail client would work with Microsoft Exchange Server (well,
not totally overlooked, but you know what I mean). Now Microsoft has
announced a deal to license a similar function to Symbian-powered
smartphones, which is generally seen as a move to fight off RIM's
BlackBerry mail service, which is moving out onto non-RIM phones like
the Siemens SK65. Good news if you've got a
business that runs an Exchange server, but not all that interesting if
you're just a shlub like me with a great big IMAP account. Expect to
see Symbian phones with the functionality next year.
And while you're over at MobileTracker, you might check out Jon's
video of the Samsung A970, the EV-DO phone that eats like a
camcorder.
