Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel 05/20/2004 11:37 AM
The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made babies. What if Jesus survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article, "Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm burned out on the whole Holy Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel. Link

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail 05/21/2004 11:17 AM
An historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance, both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code. Link to a National Public Radio piece about the code-breakers. Li nk to the BBC story on the vandalism. (Thanks, Kev!)

West Wing Better?

West Wing Better? 11/15/2003 11:02 AM
Good discussion this morning on NPR's Weekend Edition about whether The West Wing has improved this season after the departure of creator and genius Adam Sorkin. I think it has. I thought the conclusion of the opening episodes featuring the fabulous John Goodman was strong when it turned out [SPOILER AHEAD] that Josh's fears about Republican abuses were in fact just projections of his own overly-political worldview. The inklings of a legitimate opposition strengthen the show. On the other hand, the melodramatic split between the president and the first lady seems pretty contrived to me. And there was one moment...

The New Zealand-based performer's squeaky, ear-shredding rendition of "Dancing Queen" ( Link: MP3) was featured in a South Park episode last week. I really need to get out on the internet more often, I don't know how I missed this -- Jesus, I just figured they'd made the character up.

10 Questions for Brian McLaren, pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church, contributor to the Emergent Village:

"[T]his power of consumerism, the power of money, and the power of the desire for more, and the idea that we live for the economy — I think this has an enormously subversive and subtle power. A quick example: Right now, I'm involved with a group of people who are very concerned about the situation in Darfur in the Western Sudan. I knew there was a genocide going on there twelve months ago, and four hundred thousand more people have died since then. I think I just assumed somebody would do something about it. And it’s just stunning to me about how little can get done. Meanwhile, Christians are arguing about what seems to me to be incredibly pathetic, trivial things compared to 400 thousand people dying, when, if they can get so much stuff out there about their national agenda, if they were to push this to the front, four hundred thousand lives could have been saved."

Where to look for other postmodern Christians: Sojourners, RELEVANT.

Yeah, it's a bitch to install without command line access -- though there are ways -- but Drupal's getting so many conceptual things right that it can't be ignored. Drupal looks very rich and very extensible. Because it's open-source GNU/GPL licensed, I predict it'll pull ahead and stay ahead of all competing products. The UI's not all it...
