12/20/2003 03:55 AM The first images from the
Spitzer Space Telescope,
formerly known as the Space Infrared Telescope Facility and renamed
after astrophysicist
Lyman Spitzer,
Jr., were released on Thursday. Launched on August 25, it obtains
images by detecting the
infrared
energy radiated by objects in space, and it will
drift behind the
Earth as the planet orbits the sun.

Shooting outside of
our vision. Infrared photography is cool - the world looks
surreal. But man, it's a PIA. Just keeping the film at the right
temperatures is difficult.
So, all of this can be done digitally. I still haven't gotten around
to buying the necessary pieces, but in replying to this

12/19/2004 03:24 PMEliot Spitzer, a guy I went to high school with, has been making
headlines
for a few years now. In a decade that has seen a retreat from
progressive politics across the board, he's picked up the tools
available to him as New York State attorney general and used them
creatively and effectively to represent the interests of ordinary
citizens. His investigations and prosecutions in the securities,
mutual funds and insurance industries have exposed longstanding
practices by which insiders profit at the expense of the public they
ostensibly serve.
In a better world, the bodies that are supposed to be the watchdogs
in these areas would be doing their jobs. Since they haven't been,
Spitzer's investigations have represented the public's last line of
defense.
I haven't agreed with every position Eliot has taken in his career
(for instance, I don't support the death penalty), but there isn't any
other Democratic politician out there right now who has been more
effective at fighting the self-dealing, cronyism and plundering of the
public good that characterize Bush-era business.
Today, in what was a long-expected move, Spitzer announced that
he's running for governor of New York in 2006. And he announced it on
a page labeled "
Eliot's Blog" -- that appears to be a real, functional weblog.
Welcome to the blogosphere, Eliot -- I think you'll like it.

Hubble
harvests 100 new planets during a 7-day sweep of the bulge of the
Milky Way.. If confirmed it would almost double the number of known
planets to about 230. "I think this work has the potential to be
the most significant advance in discovering extra-solar planetary
systems since the first planets were discovered in the
mid-1990s."

First sight of alien planets
First sight of alien planets
03/23/2005 08:36 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Astronomers used the
NASA Spitzer Space Telescope to see planets outside our
solar system for the first time ever. Previously, scientists have
inferred the existence of more than 100 planets by detecting a
gravity-induced wobble or shift in light in the stars that they orbit.
Yesterday, the astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics and the Goddard Space Flight Center announced that they
directly observed the infrared radiation emitted by two planets 153
and 500 light-years away. (Seen here is a NASA
artist's concept.) From the New York Times:
They said directly measuring light from the planets was a major step
in the quest to understand what alien planets are made of, because
different molecules in the atmosphere absorb infrared light in
characteristic ways and allow scientists to compare these alien
planets to those in the solar system. Ultimately, astronomers would
like to know if Earth, with its ability to evolve and support life, is
unique or common in the universe....
Dr. Geoffrey W. Marcy, a planet hunter at the University of
California, Berkeley, called the results "the stuff of history books"
and added, "With this result, we are closer to understanding our own
human roots, chemically, among the stars."

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors
Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors
03/23/2005 07:57 PMTwo teams of Astronomers this week discovered the color of two
planets by using infrared radiation. This break-through will allow
experts to discover what the planet’s surface or
atmosphere are made of. This is a major finding. According to Astronomy Magazine,

Charbonneau's group used the Spitzer Space
Telescope's Infrared Array Camera to home in on the light from TrES-1,
a "hot Jupiter" zipping around a Sun-like star about 500 light-years
from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The astronomers tracked the
intensity of two infrared "colors" as the planet passed behind its
star, an event called secondary eclipse. The team subtracted the
star's radiation from the total seen when the planet was not eclipsed
by the star. Measuring the gas giant's infrared radiation allowed the
team to calculate its temperature — a sizzling 1,450° F
(1,060 kelvins). Charbonneau suspects his group has also found the
spectral fingerprint of carbon monoxide in the planet's atmosphere,
but, he says, "We're going to go back and get more data."
