FOAF : Using Open Standards To Support Community Building by Brain Kelly
http://www.ariadne. ac.uk/issue39/web-focus/

Brian Kelly takes a look at the FOAF Semantic Web application and suggests it is time to start evaluating this technology. The term FOAF stands for Friend of a Friend. As might be deduced from this phrase one of the key applications of FOAF is to provide a mechanism for creating links to one's friends. From the links to one's immediate circle of friends automated software can be used to process links from your friends, which can provide a visualisation of 'friends of a friend'. FOAF is a Semantic Web application which can be used to provide personal information in a form suitable for automated processing. On a page created in HTML Web authors often provide personal information, such as contact details, interests, etc. Such information is ideally suited for reading but cannot easily be repurposed by automated tools. FOAF was designed to enable such information to be provided in a form which could not only be displayed as conventional Web page content but also to be used for automated processing. The FOAF Semantic Web application has been added to the Semantic Web Research section of Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. It also has been added to my posting on Online Social Networks.

Linux Standards Set 09/14/2004 03:08 PM

The Free Standards Group announced this morning the availability of the Linux Standard Base (LSB) 2.0, an essential component for the long-term market success of Linux. By ensuring a common, agreed-upon standard from which Linux applications may be developed, the LSB supports Linux developer's competition with Microsoft and its Windows operating system.

The Free Standards Group is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and promoting open source software standards. The Linux Standard Base, one of the organization's projects, helps to prevent divergence in Linux development and the potential for conflicting Linux distributions: applications written for one Linux distribution should, if the LSB is followed, work on all distributions.

Dave's Opinion
The Linux Standard Base specification contains a base set of APIs, libraries and interoperability standards. These are the fundamental tools necessary to create an industry-wide Linux standard. This is the right way to develop an operating system.

Having solidified backing from the major Linux distribution vendors and, more recently, new ISV (Independent Software Vendor) members who have helped shape it, the Linux Standard Base (LSB) has come of age and is now ready to be pushed in new directions to make it more usable and useful, according to Free Standards Group executive director Jim Zemlin.

Folks in the software industry doubt Linux will suffer from the same kind of forking and fragmenting that limited Unix and its ISV support, but the idea may nevertheless be pushed as an offensive against Linux by Microsoft, which is already running ads in Europe depicting mutant penguins assembled with other animal parts as if to suggest they are unsure what they are.
