04/19/2004 09:35 AM
Apple Computer's PoweBook G4 professional line now includes AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth 1.2 as standard features: Before this announcement, PowerBook buyers of most models had to decide whether to add a $100 AirPort Extreme adapter or a $50 Bluetooth option. The Bluetooth adapter had to be ordered at the time of purchase while the AirPort Extreme Card could be installed later. By including these wireless options even in the entry-level $1,600 12-inch PowerBook G4 model, Apple is competing more directly and simply against the Centrino concept. From now on, Apple hopes that buyers think PowerBook and wireless the way that Intel has branded Centrino and Wi-Fi....

Being Pitched by Technology Companies

Being Pitched by Technology Companies 08/27/2004 01:52 PM

I get in my inbox on a daily basis a dozen or so pitches from companies looking to have their product pitched. My response always is send me the item and let me keep it and I will write up a review. The software guys are happy to do this, but not the hardware people. I guess we don't have a big enough readership to warrant being given hardware to test.

I am not surprised others are getting the same pitches. I would be interested in seeing if anyone is scoring any cool hardware. After all if I am going to pitch a product you can be sure I have used it and will be giving you all the plus and minuses of the product in question. [Loosewire]

Cory pitched to Microsoft that DRM is bad for their business. I'm surprised he didn't use the recent example of HD-DVD. Apparently the DVD Forum was considering the Jon Johansen Problem and came up with a simple solution: computers will never ever be able to play HD-DVD movies under any circumstances. After all, this solution worked for SACD. (This doesn't address the Bunnie Huang Problem, but let's leave that for later.) Microsoft immediately protested that this would lock them out of their plan to converge PCs and home theaters. (I have no clue what Steve Jobs is thinking when he calls for strong DRM in HD-DVD; by definition if HD-DVDs are playable in OS X then the DRM is weak. Maybe he's willing to concede that market since he hates TV anyway.)

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.
