Feature: Take Control of Making Music

03/22/2005 05:04 PM

With GarageBand 2, you can create exciting songs quickly and easily using the music loops that come with Apple's music-creation program--even if you know nothing at all about writing music. In this excerpt, we'll cover the process of putting together and editing a song as well as working with a loop. The ditty we'll create throughout article may be simple, but it will cover a lot of territory about GarageBand.

Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand

Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
04/16/2005 09:26 PM

Anyone using an Apple will have a special treat in store for them. Trent Reznor from the Nine Inch Nails has released the full-tracked GarageBand Format of their song, "The Hands That Feeds". This is a first as far as we know. Here is the info direct from Trent and you can download the song from MacMegaSite.

For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results.
After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So...
You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems.
Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.
I gave this to my crew and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while - it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo).
There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
Trent Reznor

Among the many clueless things the recording industry has done over the past few years is freak out over people daring to (oh my!) put lyrics online. We've written about a few cases where lyrics sites were forced to shut down due to angry recording industry lawyers, who somehow seem to think that putting up lyrics that make it easier for music fans to enjoy songs is damaging to the industry. It appears that this is still happening, as a bunch of lyrics sites in Germany are being threatened by the recording industry for writing out the lyrics of various songs. It would be interesting to see exactly how the industry thinks they're losing money by having people write out song lyrics online.

Making Beautiful Music By Circuit

06/03/2004 03:32 PM
With all the disposable electronic gadgetry that seems to accumulate around us, it's nice to see that people still use old electronics to do cool stuff. No, not making a fishtank out of an iMac. We're talking about "circuit-bending" music -- made from hacking old speak-and-spells, Furby dolls and dot matrix printers. Granted, it's not a completely new concept since I seem to recall Jimi Hendrix used to re-wrap the coils in his guitar pickups to get more feedback and flavor to his sound. But it's interesting that the interfaces for musical instruments may be becoming more and more circuit-driven. For example, there's even a grand piano made from a circuit printed on cardboard. Obviously, it's not like classical instruments are ever going to die completely, but maybe kids won't have to lug around big trombones anymore. Or maybe circuit-bending music will get killed off when these circuit-bent musicians get sued for inappropriately hacking the hardware they use.

GarageBand!! 01/22/2004 03:05 AM
When Apple announced iLife '04 a couple of weeks ago, a common reaction was moaning over the price, which went from free to $49. Which is ridiculous...$49 is a steal for that bundle of software. After playing around with GarageBand this morning, I can report that GB alone is worth the price. I've never had this much fun with a piece of software before...I got my money's worth after 30...

GarageBand and CC

So Apple released this amazing new part of iLife, GarageBand. With it, you can make great music. (Well, I don't know about you, but I know Willem will make great music with it.) Anyway, one missing piece has been a simple way to know what content you're free to mix and remix within your GarageBand app. MacBand has now solved that problem. They've got a great archive of music by genre -- all marked with Creative Commons licenses.

GarageBand

I’ve been waiting 20 years for GarageBand.

Back in the early ’80s, when I was a teenager—before there were even Macs—I had an Apple II Plus with a cool piece of software named ALF II. (This was even before the sitcom named Alf.)

(Actually, it wasn’t just software: there was a card you had to plug into the computer.)

It was something like an early, early GarageBand—you could create music and save songs and play them back. The music played through some car-stereo speakers I plugged in to the ALF card.

You had to actually enter notes into a staff on-screen, using the twin roller-paddle-things that came with the Apple II Plus. (No mice yet, at least not for the mass market.) There was no way to plug in an instrument and just play.

It had up to nine tracks, and it had some basic things like setting the synthesizer settings and telling sections of a track to repeat.

It was cumbersome and the sound was totally electronic, but it worked. I made dozens of songs. I loved it.

And I’ve been waiting 20 years for the chance to do that again. Sure, I could have had this already, but for a bunch more money. Since composing music was just a hobby for me, I never wanted to spend a bunch on music software. Now I don’t have to.

This software excites me personally far beyond anything Apple has announced since OS X. More than iPhoto, iTunes, Safari, iPods, and everything else put together.

Of course, I haven’t actually tried it yet, but it only has to be half as good as the demo to be a wonderful (to me, at least) piece of software.
