FastMac on Monday announced an iPod battery upgrade that utilizes patented nanoparticle technology. The company's new upgrade utilizes patented nanoparticle technology codenamed “TruePower,” that significantly slows the degradation of the battery by protecting and preventing damage to the battery’s internal lithium crystal matrix caused by power spikes. “If you’re spending more time recharging your iPod than you are actually using it, this upgrade is for you” Business Development Manager for FastMac Performance Upgrades Michael Lowdermilk said. “This really is the last battery your iPod will ever need.” The upgrade is available for first, second and third generation iPods and comes with a two-year warranty.

Review: FastMac 1.5GHz PowerMac G4 AGP
Upgrade
08/19/2004 03:16 PM
For this week's Spymac product review, we decided to test out FastMac's $499.95 (US) 1.5GHz PowerMac G4 AGP upgrade. I'm sure that you've all seen the ads from various manufacturers in your favorite Mac magazine, "Turn your Apple I into a Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 with this simple hardware drop-in!" Could they be true? Is your early-model Macintosh able to serve a purpose better than that of a paper weight or professional dust collector? Well, I'm about to answer those questions for you, and more. I can still remember the day when I made the switch from PC to Mac. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and my parents had just lent me eight thousand dollars (NOTE TO PARENTS: "Thanks"). Her name, was G4 Gigabit Ethernet, code name "Mystic", and she was beautiful. With her dual 500MHz processors, industry-first standard 1000 Base-T ethernet, 256MB of RAM, 40GB hard drive, ATI RAGE 128 Pro video card, internal DVD-RAM drive, 2 USB and Firewire ports and 250MB internal ZIP drive she could bring any application to its knees. Photoshop, "Bring it on". Illustrator, "HA." Director, "Tell me again about this 'rendering time', because I've never seen such a thing." But over time, the applications grew stronger, and while they were in development, with super houses around the globe beefing up, my baby was reluctantly nearing retirement. She was a tough old broad though, and could still run with the new kids on the block, Digital Audio, Quicksilver, and even Donnie. Sadly though, we both knew that our time together was nearing an end, or was it? Enter FastMac. Based in the good ol' US of A, FastMac has been reuniting Mac lovers with their old flames since 1998. With upgrades available for almost every early-model Macintosh under the sun, it's almost guaranteed that you will love again (click here</a&g t; for a complete listing of upgradeable machines). As previously mentioned, we chose to resurrect my Dual 500MHz Gigabit Ethernet G4 using the 1.5GHz PowerMac G4 AGP upgrade. The company's website claims that, "in no time, your machine will once again be transformed into a tower of power," and by oh boy, they sure as heck weren't lying. On the morning that the processor arrived I decided to walk home for lunch. I opened the door, shouted, "Honey, I'm home," to no response I might add, and headed upstairs to my office. Once there, things couldn't have been any more simple. With one lift of my fingers, I opened the side panel of my G4 to expose its metallic innards. Armed with only a pair of common household phillips and flathead screwdrivers, I began the operation. Remove heatsink, "check," remove original processor "check," install new FastMac processor "check," smile at ease of process "check". Anyhow, once the new unit was installed, I followed the directions and rebooted my computer (for those of you who have never attempted a hardware installation in your life, this is the point at which your heart beats at approximately 130BPM, your head begins to sweat and every second seems like about ten hours). After a series of standard whizzes and purrs I saw that familiar start up screen. The air was then filled with cries of "Hallelujah!" and "Boo Yeah! Boo Yeah! Who's your daddy now sucka?" Time to test this puppy out, first stop, the System Profiler. By default, the upgraded FastMac processor comes preset for machines with a 100MHz bus speed, such as mine. Thus, immediately the System Profiler detected this wonderful new addition to the family and gave me the following readout, "CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz". So far, so great. What would be the next logical step in testing out this little gift from above? You guessed it, open up twenty applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, Director, iTunes, Final Cut Pro and Maya. After all twenty applications were open, I clicked on a song from my iTunes playlist and went to town on this processor. In every graphics application, applying filters was noticeably faster. It is here that I must make a confession however. When I first heard of the news that my dual processor tag-team would be exchanged for a solo single processor, I had my doubts. Two are better than one, right? Not in this case my friends. With multiple images being mutilated in multiple programs at a single time, the computer didn't even so much as hiccup. Most systems would have begged for mercy at this point, but my little warrior was begging for more. Why not throw some video rendering in there? How about some audio filters? Oh, what's that, you want some 3D rendering in there as well? Done. Still, she chugged on with a look in her eyes that seemed to say, "Is that all you got punk?" That was all that I had. Every operation performed faster. Whether it was something as big as rendering an entire video clip, or as small as opening a Finder window, the speed increase was noticeable. My baby was back, and she was better than ever. Taking into account all of the above, I give this product "Two Thumbs Up," "5 Stars," and a pat on the back. For only $499.95 (US) you can breathe new life into a computer that you once thought to be deceased. Not ready to spend that much on your baby (shame on you)? FastMac offers a number of G4 upgrades, such as the 700MHz upgrade, starting at $199.95 (US). However, there are other options available. Maybe you feel it's time to move on, maybe you can't stand the sight of her anymore, maybe, just maybe, it is time to move on. If you've lost that loving feeling, for around $799.00 (US) you can enter into a new relationship with the 1.25GHz Combo-Drive eMac G4. The choice is yours, so follow your heart. Products can be purchased online through their store, and the site also includes an FAQ section to help answer any questions that you may have. Oh, and there's one more thing, are you ready for this? As the saying goes, "It's better to have loved and lost, then to never have loved at all," well now, with a FastMac upgrade, you can keep that love alive for years to come. The iMac Tray-Load G4/466MHz upgrade from FastMac has a Motorola 450MHz G4 7400 processor running at 466MHz, an upgraded 1 MB backside cache, an AltiVec Velocity Engine and a 1 year limited (defect and workmanship) warranty. Though only beginning to sell its products under the FastMac name to consumers in 2003, the company has been creating and selling upgrade products for Macintosh computers since 1998. The upgraded machine was a Grape 333 MHz iMac with a recently upgraded 80 GB hard drive. Installing the FastMac processor upgrade is fairly straight-forward when following FastMac's provided instructions. After removing the cables it is advised that the computer be left for five minutes in order for the components to cool. Following the five minute wait, the next step was to remove the screws at the top of the logic board/mass storage chassis. That step was followed by disconnecting the audio, RGB, main power and IrDA cables, then removing the logic board/mass storage chassis. Later the processor card top shield was removed, then the heat sink clip and heat sink. The processor card was then removed from the logic board connectors by using the heatsink clip. An important piece of information to note when replacing the processor card is that it is important to firmly seat the processor in the logic board connectors, as the connectors are not located in the center of the board, pressure has to be applied in just the right spot for proper installation. If the processor card is not seated correctly (as I found out after putting all of the parts back together), the iMac will not boot. After the processor removal, the RAM was then transferred from the old card onto the new FastMac card, then the process was reversed. {_pic} The FastMac upgrade performed extremely well. After the processor upgrade, overall performance increased, with speeds nearly doubling that of the original processor. Booting Classic from OS X was about twice as fast, as well as ripping a song from CD, and exporting using Photoshop. Screen redraws were also faster and scrolling was quicker. The $199.95 upgrade might not be worth the price if there are any features offered in a new iMac or eMac that might catch your attention. To sell the old machine (for around $300) and then adding that amount to the money saved for not buying the processor upgrade ($199), would leave the purchaser with only spending an additional $300 to get a new 1.25 GHz eMac; a machine that is significantly better than the old iMac. eMac's offer the same all in one design of the 333 iMac but a new eMac would give an extra 2" of flat-CRT display area, a better resolution, faster processor, a combo drive, FireWire ports and a larger hard drive. Though the FastMac upgrade is an "incredible boost of speed and power, allowing you to enjoy the next generation of Macintosh products without burning a hole in your wallet," a small wallet hole might not be that bad if looking for a significantly better machine. For consumers who may not have the extra cash to spend on a new machine, the FastMac upgrade is a cost-effective way to upgrade a machine and is recommend if more processing power is needed.
