Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM

Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

in-dash2d.jpg imageIn a ground-breaking trial, Alaskan prosecutors have accused a driver who accidentally killed a couple in a car accident of watching a DVD on an in-dash player during the accident, something that is not technically illegal in Alaska, but possibly still convictable as manslaughter (I'm presuming). We've all done stupid things like operate electronics while driving, and while I'm not saying this guy shouldn't be prosecuted if proven negligent, there is an interesting precedent set (or maybe not set) here. Watching a movie while driving is irresponsible, but is it that much different than looking at a map on an in-car guidance system LCD screen while driving? Hard to say. How much distraction is too much distraction?

04/12/2004 07:36 AM
Macs can be found all over Hollywood: in editing rooms, in story meetings, in music recording sessions, on set and just about anywhere else that creative types congregate. Given their relatively low key but fundamentally important position in the industry, screenwriters don't often receive recognition for the Macs sitting on their desks, but you'll find them there too.

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie 09/20/2004 06:52 AM
Not so long ago, there was a bit of a press frenzy over a novel that was being delivered via SMS text messaging in China. Well, to build off of that hype, a company has now bought the film rights to the story, and yes, they will be filming it in short segments which can be sent to mobile phones as well. While I do think mobile video content should be focused on shorter bits of content, given that the people viewing it are likely to be on the go and/or interrupted more frequently, I wonder how well you can hold the plot line of a movie that's broken into so many pieces.

VoIP: The Movie 09/17/2004 02:31 PM
This is almost painful. A broadband provider trying to push the concept of VoIP (no, they don't deserve any more publicity by being named here) has decided to start an advertising campaign for VoIP that involves a series of movie trailers about "VoIP: The Movie" which are designed to look like trailers from a thriller movie, and which aren't at all clear about what they're really advertising (though, the phone does seem to play a central part). Cue movie trailer voiceover voice: "No one can escape it, we're all slaves to it...."

If you didn't know already, Microsoft owns part of MSNBC. (Where do you think the MS of MSNBC comes from?) So, it may well be the Redmond company's secret weapon in pushing its Portable Media Centers.

Or maybe not. How many times have your kids in the back-seat of your car asked for the latest update on the Michael Jackson trial?

But, nevertheless, Apple should take note. And perhaps Pixar too.
