MIT's Tech Review Pulls A Jayson Blair

MIT's Tech Review Pulls A Jayson Blair 03/22/2005 05:03 PM

nonuser writes "MIT's Technology Review retracted two stories on reaction by HP rank and file employees to the firing of CEO Carly Fiorina, both written by a New York freelance journalist named Michelle Delio. The stories referred to a Hungarian immigrant, identified only by the initials G.S., who worked at HP's Imaging System Laboratory for nearly three decades before resigning in disgust in 2003. G.S. compared Fiorina's leadership with that of the Communist regime he had fled. The only problem was the employee apparently didn't exist, as HP officials pointed out to the embarrassed Tech Review editor." Delio (who also used to write articles for Wired News) apparently still insists that the guy is real -- but no one else can find any evidence of him. It's also not clear if this is a case where Delio made the guy up, or someone tricked Delio into believing he was real. The original Tech Review article was a bit strange. When reading it, it seemed that the guy put in enough information about himself that it would be quite easy to figure out who he was if you worked at HP Labs. Still, what may be most interesting is that HP actually did an internal investigation to figure out who the guy was.

Mitch Albom, one of the most decorated sports columnists ever and a best selling author, has been busted for fabricating information in his latest Detroit Free Press column. Albom has apologiz ed, but this has set the sports journalism field abuzz, many happy to the star of the Freep squirm. The President of The National Society of Newspaper Columnists has called the column "bogus" and an "egregious ethical lapse." Others wonder why he wasn't suspended or fired, thinking his status as an author and TV / radio personality is allowing him special favors. The Freep has started an inve stigation and may look into previous articles. To top it all off, here's the pot calling the kettle black.

General Motors miffed at LA Times
review, pulls all advertising
04/09/2005 01:12 AM
Breezing through today’s news wires, I was surprised and disturbed to see an article at the Beeb entitled GM Stops Advertising in LA Times. According to the report, Dan Neil, Los Angeles Times automotive writer, had an article published in which he called for the ouster of GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner, and now General Motors is refusing to run any adverts in the Times. Earlier this week, General Motors announced that the same…

Xeni Jardin: Technology Review online editor Brad King says:
This year, Technology Review magazine will again assemble a list of top young innovators under the age of 35 -- the TR35, or "35 Innovators under 35." The basic idea, however, is the same: to showcase young people who have displayed extraordinary talent and potential as technology innovators. The list will be published in TR's October 2005 issue, and the 35 winners honored at the Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT in September.

SBC Pulls Out the Stops in Wi-Fi Deals

SBC Pulls Out the Stops in Wi-Fi Deals 07/20/2004 02:21 PM
SBC Communications announced a host of Wi-Fi partnerships and deals today to extend the reach of its network and maximize traffic passing across locations they operate: SBC will resell access to its FreedomLink network, which will include 300 Caribou Coffee stores (Midwest and South-central and Southeast coast) as well as the thousands of The UPS Store locations, to iPass, GoRemote, and Syniverse. This reselling agreement will be live by the end of 2004. SBC FreedomLink subscribers will have access to Concourse Communications hotspots (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Detroit, and Minneapolis/St. Paul), Telmex (400 Mexican locations), and Wise Technologies (an array of retail and airport venues). Access to those locations won't be included in a monthly fee from SBC, but will cost just $4 per day, which is often less than half the cost of the retail prices for those venues. This roaming arrangement will also be in place before year's end. In the same press release, SBC notes that it is selling 3,000 home Wi-Fi gateways each day to SBC Yahoo! DSL customers. They reiterated that later this year, FreedomLink will be offered to its DSL subscribers at a "significant discount." SBC is deploying several tactics at once here, increasing the size of its self-operated network to make the total number of hotspots more appealing to subscribers while also making the network more appealing to resellers. Providing discounted access to other hotspot network is useful for business travelers who may have no compunction about paying $4 a few times a month for airport access. By emphasizing the scale of home Wi-Fi adoption and its coming discounted plan for its millions of DSL subscribers, SBC also makes the network more appealing to new venues considering which hotspot operator to work with....

bluespoon_ax.jpg imageI've held off from buying a Bluetooth headset for my own because they mostly all look like my ear is crapping a Transformer. The Bluespoon AX is small enough, though, that I'm going to pick one up—I've used too many to know how handy they are and I think I can handle the $100 price of the AX. X-Gadget got a hold of the first batch of headsets (there are only a handful in the US at the moment) and have their initial impressions online. The first batch had a weird ringing that appears to be fixed in the production models.
