Did Barry Diller Just Admit He Bought
Ask Jeeves On A Whim?
03/30/2005 08:33 PM
While certainly there was some head scratching over why Barry Diller's IAC bought AskJeeves, statements out of the company today are even more strange. The company has admitted that going forward they're going to be "more selective." Does that mean, they weren't particularly selective at all in buying Ask Jeeves? Apparently so: "We would look at other things but the bar would be higher." Makes you wonder if they're having a bit of buyer's remorse. While they go on to say that Ask Jeeves will be an important part of their strategy going forward, it still seems like an odd, and somewhat disparaging, thing to say about their newly acquired search engine property.

OK - so first you graduate from Clay Shirky's exclusive school of thought, eat the red pill, drink some koolaid and do something Clay thinks is cool.

Then you use the blogosphere to launch - but you never really achieve critical mass - but that's OK. As long as Cory Doctorow or Xeni think it's cool - you're set. There's not need to achieve positive cash flow or even have more than 2 employees.

Just build up a "little traction" and come up with some cool model like "Stoli Vodka" wants to be your friend. Come here to meet Stoli (or was it Skye?) [NOTE: Eli reminds me that it was Absolut.]

Then just stand back and wait to get bought out. It worked for ODDpost, Flickr and now Dodgeball - who's next?
