Good news for Miyazaki fans 03/22/2005 05:01 PM

Mark Frauenfelder: Howl2 Scott says: "Howl's Moving Castle will be released in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York on June 10. An expanded release will follow domestically in 700 to 800 theatres. In comparison, the general release of Spirited Away was extremely limited and only expanded to 700+ theaters after it won the Oscar for Best Animated Theatrical Feature. The Shinkong Mitsukoshi department store in Taipei recently hosted an exhibit of artwork from the film, including beautiful sculpted sets. Here's a link to 33 photos from the show."

No news is good news for Dean

No news is good news for Dean 02/01/2005 10:02 PM
Howard Dean's road to the DNC chairmanship keeps getting clearer. Going into this week, it appeared that there were only two potential roadblocks big enough to stop Dean's momentum. The first was the endorsement of the Association of State Democratic Chairs. If the chairs came together behind some other candidate, other voting members of the DNC might jump on the anti-Dean bandwagon. But on Monday, the chairs voted overwhelmingly to endorse Dean. The second potential roadblock was labor, but the A FL-CIO has just announced that it won't be endorsing anyone. Dean would have preferred to pick up the AFL-CIO endorsement, of course, but his opposition needed it more. The candidates will fight it out for individual union endorsements now, but no one will get the big, momentum-swinging punch that the AFL-CIO would have provided. Put this one in Dean's column, and move him a few squares closer to victory on Feb. 12.

The good news is that Lucasfilm have released a minute and half long trailer for KOTOR, but the bad news is Galaxies has been delayed. Posting in the official Star Wars Galaxies forums, LucasArts' Haden Blackman said that "deliver the best possible massively multiplayer experience and ensure stability and breadth of content, LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment will delay the game's April 15 launch. This will enable us to invest more time into the beta program, and to solicit additional feedback from the tremendous fan base Star Wars Galaxies has already developed."

Why it's good there are no ads on
Scripting News

Why it's good there are no ads on
Scripting News
03/23/2005 08:15 AM

A picture named chuckBerry.jpgLast night I had a brief phone talk with Steve Gillmor. I told him I had finally figured out why it's good that there are no ads on Scripting News, and then spaced out on saying why (our conversations are often like this, lots of ideas back and forth, we never quite finish most).

So I thought I would explain here.

First, consider yesterday's edition. Among the top items are three that are clearly anti-Republican. Now if you support the Republicans, no matter how much they abuse your trust (heh, sorry bout that), and I was running ads, you might think that, by reading this blog, you were helping finance someone who you disagree with politically. I wouldn't have much chance of talking to Republicans.

However, because I'm not running ads, and have no reason, other than wanting to influence more people, to seek more readers, you can relax and have fun, maybe mutter to yourself when you see me criticizing the President and the Speaker and Majority Leader, people you admire and respect, people who should of course have their own blogs, btw.

That's not to say that blogs-with-ads are necessarily bad, but ads on Scripting News are not for me. As I said in yesterday's podca st, I'd happily pay money to get some ideas heard more, so for me, it's consistent to run Scripting News ad-free.

Why Google News Is a *Good* Thing

Why Google News Is a *Good* Thing 09/30/2002 01:19 AM
8 Reasons Why Google News Is a *Good* Thing Dave writes how he's not impressed by Google News. Exact post: Google PR sends a message that they have a new News service. Maybe I'm slow this morning, or maybe I'm spoiled, but what's the big deal. I thought they already had this. My personal aggregator is better, it shows me what I'm interested in, it's not one size fits all. Help me figure this out. I'm sure there's something innovative here, I just don't see it. Permalink From a technical perspective I'm not sure that there is a lot that's new here. I still think this is huge though: My aggregator is just that mine -- I heavily tilt it in favor of tech / blogging / highly ecclectic stuff. I don't get general purpose "What's Going On" news -- and, sure, that's my fault. So what? A personal aggregator is always or at least often going to be this way. Google is giving me a much more balanced viewpoint. That's huge. Google is integrating foreign and U.S. feeds into one composite display. Given that there are differences in how U.S. media report stories versus foreign media, this makes it very apparent and that's good. The U.S. media is not always right. The user interface is highly functional -- I could easily see my Mom using Google News. I couldn't see her using a "traditional" aggregator be it Radio, AmphetaDesk, Drupal or another. The concept of aggregation is fundamentally important and one of the very real contributions that UserLand made to us all. Still aggregation doesn't mean squat beyond a small group of folks. Google News will introduce the concept very widely. Everything is very clearly time stamped i.e. "55 minutes ago". It's not going to get confused when someone re-edits a url they've already posted so the same thing shows up as new repeatedly. A Caveat. Google's reputation is such that I feel that they did a good job of picking the news sources which is particularly important for foreign information. When I caught the Indonesian bombing news this morning, I trusted the sources that Google chose to show me since they're from Google. Now that may be naive and perhaps it is but a lot of us will do that. They aren't relying on XML feeds so they aren't dependent on news sources that lack feeds like Voice of America. And while there are lots of ways to build these, it's generally non-trivial. Google News isn't going to replace my aggregator any time soon but it is a good tool that I can see myself using regularly. Visit Google News
