Mark Frauenfelder: Car towing companies are as bad as garbage truck companies. (Want irrefutable proof? Here's a damage-causing tow truck driver caught on camera, and here's a damage-causing garbage truck driver with photographic evidence of his wanton disregard for other people's property.)

Now, tow truck companies have a new way to make money. They drive around with a setup called Bootfinder. The system consists of a digital camera, character recognition software, and a laptop with a database that has information tagged to license plates. The tow truck drivers cruise around streets, scanning plates, looking for people who haven't paid various city fees and taxes. When the the laptop beeps, they hitch the car to the truck and tow it away.

According to Forbes, Arlington county in Virginia "has found a new task for its surveillance camera: Starting in March it plans to use the BootFinder to nab people who are on the county's rolls for just about anything, from late park and recreation fees to overdue library books.

And according to thenewspaper.com ("A Journal of the Politics of Driving) "If the car's owner is listed as delinquent, the car can be towed -- and if the owner doesn't pay within 10 days the car is auctioned." L ink

Prentice-Hall to publish series of books
under open license
03/13/2003 10:16 AM

Prentice-Hall , a major textbook publishing house, announced that it would publish a series of six books under the Open Publication Licence ( OPL ). Books in the Bruce Perens Open Source Software line will address open source and Linux topics , and be available electronically, as well as in print format:

The books are sold like any technical book. Two of the titles are in all of the the Barnes and Noble stores right now. But they are legal to copy, modify, and redistribute. The electronic versions of the books are placed on the web a few months after the print versions hit stores. The advantage of these books is that they need never go out of print. The electronic version can be kept up to date by anyone who cares to, and can be printed and sold. An instructor who is using them to teach a class can also tailor them to their particular needs, and a poor student need not buy the textbook to have it.
Although readers (or users) might obtain and copy the books for free, Perens and Prentice-Hall hope the open license will spur increased demand for the subjects of the books, and for the books themselves, as some others have done.

Hey, Your Library's Books Are in My
Google. No, Your Google Is in My Library
Books.
12/19/2004 03:36 PM

So the big< /a> news is about Google and libraries. I don't feel the need to comment on this right now, as you can find plenty of other places for that. However, here are a few angles I haven't seen discussed elsewhere in the library blogosphere.

  • Librari es and the Internet

"More broadly, the Internet can profoundly improve the relationship between libraries and society. For example, there are two major libraries in my town -- a college library, and a public library. My library card works in both places. I used to favor the college library, because there was open WiFi access there -- which meant, among other things, that I could use LibraryLookup from my laptop to find books in the stacks. Recently, though, the college shut down its open access point. And from an IT administrator's point of view, I can understand why. Not long after, the public library installed an open access point. So now it's my favorite spot, and lately I notice other mobile professionals congregating there too." [Jon Udell's Weblog
(Click over to read Jon's story about getting locked in the library, too!)

  • "A quick calculation using the figures above suggests an average scan rate of 3200 volumes per day (assuming 365 days/year for 6 years) at the University of Michigan site alone." [Tito Sierra on the WEB4 LIB mailing list]

  • "An even quicker calculation shows that they will need to digitize 2.25 books _a_minute_, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year to digitize 7 million volumes in six years." [Roy Tennant on the WEB4 LIB mailing list]

It's times like this when I wish Karen Coyle had< /a> a blog.

Pu t Books on Your iPod

"iPodLibrary provides 'books' in the form of iPod notes for your reading in concert with listening pleasure during the morning commute (assuming you're not behind the wheel, of course).

Ideally suited to reference, sports and music info, guides and so-on, we now aim to make them available here at iPodLibrary.com - and also aim to encourage as many people as possible to author their own and to submit them for distribution. All kinds of arcane and fun topics would work well... have a think.... "

RSS Blender

"Today, John Battelle mentioned Blender Prototype put out by the guys at Waypath (I think). Here's how it works. The user plugs in up to 5 RSS Feeds and chooses the degree of relatedness to the content from the feeds for books from the Amazon database (Here's where the ads come in). So, the ads come from Amazon, but they are semi-personalized.

I tried to create a feed, but Feed on Feeds didn't like the Feed URL (I used my site, Jenny's, Gary's, and Jessamyn's for my feeds with very close Amazon book ads). If anyone can get this to work, let me know in the comments (and mention what books show up). This could be interesting." [Library Stuff]

Indeedy it could be. Of course, it would be even more interesting if the books came out of your library's catalog and linked directly to request forms.
