The inauguration of September heralds the opening of the current
opera season within the United States. Predictable mainstays of
standard repertoire will return, but a few notable performances will
make their
debut this season. One of the new performances that has
been already generating excitement is
Margaret Garner, to be
hosted
by Detroit’s
Michigan Opera Theater in May. With the libretto composed
by Nobel Laureate
Toni Morrison, the
opera is a musical extrapolation of her 1987 novel Beloved.
Margaret Garner is the
autobiographical account of a
Kentucky sl
ave who journeys to Ohio with her family to live in freedom.
However, the Garner family is intercepted during their pilgrimage by
slave traders who threaten capture, and rather than have her daughter
live in bondage, Margaret murders her. Top mezzo-soprano
Denyce Graves stars as the
lead, and it will be directed by Kenny Leon, last seen conducting P.
Diddy in Broadway's
Raisin in the
Sun.

recommended if you haven't seen it already. The I ♥ Huckabees
trailer looks promising. In vaguely related news our Netflix queue is
+300 DVDs, plus a couple dozen movies "in queue" on our firewire
drives. Yikes. Not enough time to use the projector....

Where Is Celebration III Going To Be

12/19/2003 11:31 AMOver and over again we get emailed the question about the next Star
Wars Celebration. While Lucasfilm still has yet to officially announce
the Celebration 3, we can give you an update on what we know so far
and it fits with rumors others like starwarz.com are hearing as well.
What we keep hearing is that Lucasfilm should announce it quite soon -
hopefully no later than just after the holiday break at Lucasfilm. We
certainly hope January is the time for the official announcement at
the latest. And yes, the location again is Indianapolis, IN and the
date that keeps surfacing is April 22-24, 2005. We've heard that the
next issue of the Star Wars Insider will also carry the announcement,
but we expect it to be trumped by the Official Site as an exclusive
there. So don't make travel plans and reservations yet, but expect the
mad dash to begin shortly after the announcement.

plans, booth prices and so much more. The interesting thing is that
additional vendor passes cost $90 on pre-order and $105 at the event.
Vendor passes for Celebration II were the same price as a three day
pass. So it looks like this will be the price range for a typical four
day pass to Celebration III.

again be hosting an after hours party in downtown Indy after day two
of Celebration III wraps up. The event is scheduled for April 22nd
from 7pm until midnight. It will be held in the 2nd Floor Hyatt
Regency Ballroom, and tickets are $30 at the door or only $20 if you

01/16/2004 11:35 AMCelebration, Florida, the New Urbanist planned community that Disney
built on the grounds at Walt Disney World, is being sold off as part
of the general disintegration of the Disney company. I just finished
Walt Disney and the Quest for Community, an
academic book by a real-estate scholar about Walt's obsession with
urban reform and the fascinating shift in the Disney Company's focus
from building futuristic, ambitious domed cities (the original plan
for EPCOT, the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow) to this
modest, New Urbanist venture in which the emphasis was on high-speed
data, alternative education, and building all the houses out to the
curb to encourage inter-neighbor communications.
"I moved here because I loved Disney ? we had such blind faith," said
Mrs. Shaw, treasurer of the association board. "But this was just a
business venture for them, and now it's up to us. Their success is
based on financials, and ours is going to be more, `Are you proud to
live here? Do you love your life here?' "
Others, like David Manuchia, who owns two downtown restaurants, said
they feared that the town might not be as well-oiled a machine without
Disney. "There are enough trash cans, the streets are cleaned, the
traffic is orderly," Mr. Manuchia said, citing how meticulous the
Celebration Company has been, about special events in particular.
"There is probably nobody better than Disney at making things run
smoothly."

every indication for Celebration III seems to point so far. According
to his information, we should expect the Fan Club and Lucasfilm
announcement and some news on the Celebration III location by late
spring of this year. It is moving past the preliminary stages now,
moving quickly into a reality where locations can be confirmed.
