In which I disagree with Scoble 03/22/2005 04:57 PM

Do you agree with Jamie? Whether you do or not, it's been hard to escape the Jamie propaganda machine at my university for the last couple weeks: signs, buttons, toques, shirts, a website, and probably more. As it turns out, Jamie's just one of many interchangeable spokespeople for the cause, apparently with quite a bit of cash behind them. Google reveals it's a continent-wide phenomenon. If you do agree, perhaps you'll want to o rganize an event yourself. I wonder if the campaign has made any converts yet...

That there is not a pro-Bush documentary available right now I am powerless to explain. Surely, however, the Republican National Convention will open with such a documentary, which will position Bush comfortably between Ronald Reagan and God. The Democratic convention will have a wondrous film about John Kerry. Anyone who thinks one of these documentaries is "presenting facts objectively without editorializing" should look at the other one.

    Anti-Spam Companies Claim Success; Email

    08/23/2004 12:04 PM
Because companies fighting the spam battle need to market themselves, many are touting how much success they've had in fighting spam. There's just one problem: most users are seeing more spam. There are ways to reconcile the differences, though. First, there still are a lot of people who don't use any spam filter. So, whether or not the spam filters are succeeding, these people are clearly seeing more spam. Second, even if the spam filters are succeeding in blocking out 95% or 99% or whatever percent they like to claim, there's still some getting through. With spammers increasing the amount of spam they send, the absolute number getting through increases as well. Still, it does make you wonder how we should define "success" in fighting spam.

Scoble is turning 40 on Jan. 18th, and is having a party on the 22nd.

Too bad - cause I'll be in Seattle on the 23rd, getting ready to attend Steve Boback's Blog Business Summitt. So maybe we can do a second B-Day party?

    Meanwhile I'll be 48 on Jan. 13th.

    Scoble kicks RSS ass?

Scoble kicks RSS ass? 09/12/2004 05:17 AM

Yesterday I wrote about how Seattle is kicking my ass, now it's time to debunk Scoble's gross condemnation of RSS.

On Wednesay he posted that MSDN was limiting its RSS feed, dropping full text, because they were serving terabytes through RSS, and weren't happy with the economics.

Either Scoble didn't explain or I wasn't paying attention, because they were doing something very strange< /a>: aggregating all their blogs into one feed. They have thousands of blogs. In any hour the chances that one or more blogs changed is near 100 percent. And the feed is huge, every time you load it, you're downloading a lot of blog posts you don't care about.

The solution is simple, and it follows the grain of the Web, follows the intent of micro-publishing, and it's the way every other blogging community works -- simply offer a feed for every blog. That takes care of everything. It's just wrong to turn a community of weblogs into one giant Usenet group or Yahoo mail list.

So why does Scoble blame RSS? He's got the journalist's impulse for sensationalism and he can't say Microsoft is broken or they'd fire him. ";->"

    Scoble on Persuasion

Scoble on Persuasion 04/19/2004 07:06 PM

I have to agree with Tim Bray, Scoble's post on how to be persuasive in the information age is the best he has written so far.  Not surprisingly, it points directly at the power of blogging as a tool of persuason.

I wonder if the word persuation is derived from pursue?  If so, then Scoble is saying that being persuasive doesn't mean giving a chase, but to be a person whose words are worthy of pursuit by the listener.

    Scoble Hunt

    Scoble Hunt 12/22/2004 01:33 AM

Scoble is getting a lot of heat for his Hi Bill post.  I don't see why they think he is crazy or accuse him of insulting the Windows Media team.  The only part that rubbed me the wrong way was the firing part.  The rest is just a post written by an employee who cares enough about the company he works for to hang his balls out the window.

Who cares if his suggestions don't make sense?  That's his blog.  Should bloggers be restricted to writing posts that make sense to everyone?  Well, up your foobar if you think so.

As to what I think about his post, I think his suggestions are good.  Good, not in the sense of success or brilliance, but in the sense that such change will be good for Microsoft even if the project fails.  Like people, companies don't learn or evolve while doing the same things the same ways.

Nicely Said: Scoble on Flash and using it for blogging. After checking out the wedding stuff, I see that Robert has good comments on Flash. Here's a selection: What's so glorious about plain text? Easy: Google can index it. Photos, videos, and such are nice, but wake me up when Google can look inside, OK? What else? Easy. Bandwidth. I'm often on bad bandwidth. Video and audio just plain suck when you're in some hotel room somewhere trying to partake of all the Web goodness. I definitely have to agree with him on the advantages of plain text. Still Macromedia does publish an API for indexing Flash which at least one site level search engine, Atomz, supports. A much bigger issue for me is that Flash is both proprietary and binary. I've been too burned by vendors when binary data corrupts. HTML doesn't corrupt and that just plain rocks. I've been in situations where the only way to update my blog was to use VI. So have others like Iluminent. If we were purely flash based this wouldn't be possible. [ Go ]

    Scoble plays it cool

Scoble plays it cool 07/28/2004 02:38 AM

I love this guy - Robert Scoble....

Yesterday I did the unfathomable: I turned down Steven Levy from
    Newsweek.

First, some background. Seven years ago when I was doing marketing for a
small Silicon Valley company (Winnov) I would have given quite a few of my teeth
to meet with someone like Levy.

Back then I thought it was unfair that the press paid so much attention to
big companies. It's always Microsoft this. Apple that. Sun the other thing.

Do I deserve this press attention now? No. I'm quite honored, but there are
so many companies doing so many interesting things out there that I'd like to
    point out.

Heck, since I know Steven's reading here, how about we point them out here?
Is your company doing something interesting? Think that Newsweek should write
about it? Leave a note in the comment field here.

For instance, Greg Reinacker's href="http://www.newsgator.com">NewsGator is worthy of coverage. The company
Russell Beattie works for, href="http://www.wavemarket.com/">WaveMarket, is one I'm watching. Mobile
    services are gonna be hot.

I could go on for years. Feedster. Technorati. Pubsub. Six Apart. Weblogs
inc. Groove. Konfabulator (coming soon to Windows). Napster. Active Words.

You do note many of these companies aren't currently using Microsoft
technologies. So, why do I point to them? For one, they are doing interesting
work that's expanding the market. That's real important. The way we all win is
to see new scenarios, new products, new opportunities, built by new
    companies.

So, let's hear it. Which companies do you think deserve the press'
    attention?

Oh, and Steven: sorry that we weren't able to match our schedules up this
    time.

    07/01/2004 03:53 PM

I am amazed daily on how far behind America is in cell phone technology. My sister-in-law in Japan showed me a couple of years ago how she could find information about products just by taking a picture of it although I am not sure if she scanned a barcode or not. It Seems Neomedia Technologies has finally figured out that by enabling camera phone users to scan barcodes and linking that to a net based database with product information and price comparisons could make for a popular product.

I am all for this kind of empowerment but it just pisses me off that America the land of the free is so damn far behind when it comes to personal communications. [Scobleiz er]

Note to Self: Don't Read Scoble Late at Night or Microsoft Bloggers Now Added and a Rant

A wee bit tired this morning.  I made a quick round of my normal stops in the blogosphere last night and I happened by the Scobleiz er.  Now I've met Robert in the real world and I always get something out of reading his stuff -- but it usually doesn't cost me sleep.  You see what happened is Robert pointed me off to Microsof t Watch and a list of Mi crosoft bloggers with weblogs.  So I thought "Wouldn't it be nice if they were all indexed".  And there I was making sure they got stuffed into the system.  Here's what I found:

    • Probably more than 50% of them were already in our database.  Go figure.  I guess that either a) people are adding themselves or b) the RSS auto discovery routines I wrote work better than I initially thought ;-)
    • Microsoft bloggers use a plethora of different tools.  I do think, however, that the dominant one is Radio.  Blogger, Movable Type and other systems are also represented
    • Not all Microsoft bloggers have RSS feeds
    • Topics span work and personal
    • Devhawk.net did a really smart thing with Feedster -- he added it to has blog's UI essentially as a "virtual table of contents".  Good idea.  I think I need to offer some viewing improvements if people are going to do this.
    • Someone needs to teach the "gotdotnet" folks what RSS is.  Also I couldn't believe their HTML source when I was poking around. So get ready for a vent.

<RANT CLASS=NASTY BILE=HIGH FRUSTATION=SEVERE>Go look here and look at the __VIEWSTATE input element.  To me that's just plain lame.  Use a session, send a cookie and use your horsepower for this, not my bandwidth with every page view.  And if you really want to barf then click around a bit and go here.  They seem to be encoding the entire viewing history in a really nasty way and shipping it back to you every single time.  It just gets bigger.  After navigating thru like 3 pages I had 6,554 bytes sent down the wire that did nothing for me.  Thanks for nothing.</RANT>

I guess its not all that bad actually but it just seems damn silly.  I hope that's not a dot net feature but I'm afraid that it is.  Sigh.

Meanwhile, our boy Dave is freshly wiped down and ready for action. The cleaning of Michelangelo's David has finished, much to the relief of the experts who thought that the use of water in the process would hurt the thing....

After the weblogs.com hosting debacle< /a> surfaced yet again by people trying to reignite the flames, I decided to try to discuss it again with David Weinberger, whose comments in the middle of the flamefest are widely cited as evidence of how I didn't do all I should have done to notify people with blogs on weblogs.com. I know David to be a thoughtful, careful and considerate person. And to this day well-intentioned people question my integrity over these events. That's not cool for a person such as myself who values his integrity.

We reviewed the options that people suggested at the time, 1. Send an email, or 2. Post something on Scripting News. Neither would have worked, the mail addresses were four years old and probably didn't work, most of the sites never got past the Hello World stage (so the authors might not remember creating the site, and certainly don't care), and most people with free sites weren't and probably still aren't Scripting News readers, any more than most Blogger users were Evhead readers.

Posting something on Scripting News wouldn't have notified the users, but it sure would have notified the flamers. I think they were saying that they were complaining that they weren't told in advance that it was time to rip me a new one. ";->"

Anyway, he posted a correctio n, so next time this comes up, as it is sure to, the flamers won't be able to use him to support their attacks. Thanks!

Now that I've come up for air after my latest codin g frenzy, I see that Brian Bailey has done something I should've done a long time ago: than k Dave Winer for his huge contributions to our syndicated world.

FeedDemon relies on RSS, OPML, weblogs, podcasting and SOAP - all of which were invented, co-invented or evangelized by Dave Winer. I'm having a blast developing FeedDemon, so thank you, Dave, for making my world a better a one.

Dave mentioned W3C and RSS. What is the specific proposal here? My impression is that promoting existing formats is not in the W3C's mission. I see W3C as a standards development body; given that RSS is basically done I don't see the relevance. There was PNG, where the W3C basically rubber-stamped an existing, community-developed specification, but I don't think PNG gained anything from that. Turning over maintenance of RSS would be riskier IMO, because of the possibility that the W3C would want to redesign (fork) it.
