Milne heirs don't own Pooh
01/22/2004 03:35 PMAA Milne's granddaughter has had her bid to recapture the licensing
rights to Winnie the Pooh denied by a UK court. The Milne heirs
licensed the rights to Pooh to Disney, only to discover that Milne had
previously sold them to his literary agent, who is now suing Disney
for all they're worth. The UK court ruling is the latest setback on
the way to what could be the Disney company's financial ruination for
(ironically!) trademark infringement.

because the "read/unread" status feels like unwanted pressure?
Something like:
Read statuses off by default? With an ability to toggle them

the rest as normal font-styling?

04/05/2005 07:31 PMAnnouncing something I've been playing with over the past few
nights: Fitlog
The reasoning behind the site is in the first
post to it, and I'm also fulfilling a promise
to try out WordPress, especially the "custom fields" option,
which I'm using to track my daily weight, time ridden or run, and
distance ridden or run. Since it's all in a database, I'm also using
PHP/SWF Charts to
plot a live graph of my data over time (eventually I'll graph all the
new fields, once I start running and riding more).
So far it's fun and a great motivation to get out and exercise each
day, and my hope is that I succeed in front of everyone's watchful
gaze instead of failing miserably, which of course, is always a
possibility.
Can the little guys hande the pressure?
Can the little guys hande the pressure?
04/09/2005 11:57 AMIt may not have the visibility of Macworld or the anticipation of a
special press event, but on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET, all eyes will be
on Apple.
And if history is any indicator, the immediate future of the company
is at stake.
Wednesday represents the day when Apple will report its second-quarter
earnings, the first such report since the stock split after hitting an
all-time high. Currently, the stock is treading at around $44 (or $88
in pre-split-adjusted pricing) and hasn’t budged much since the Feb.
18 division. The furthest it has dipped is $39, and it has yet to
break its $45.44 high.
Which isn't to say it hasn’t seen its share of activity. On Friday, in
fact, AAPL was the seventh most active stock, despite gaining just 18
cents. Investors seem to be split themselves on how the company will
fare in the coming months.
The good news? Apple hasn't revised its second-quarter outlook, which
was forecast to see revenue of just under $3 billion and earnings per
diluted share of 20 cents. (Wall Street expects slightly higher
results of $3.2 billion and 23 cents a share.)
But here's where Apple's reputation precedes it. Aside from the usual
profit-takers following the great divide, a split is designed to make
an astronomical stock more affordable for the masses. And
traditionally, this is what happens.
Apple, on the other hand, has seen nothing but bad luck in the months
following a stock split, the worst of which came in 2000, culminating
with a single-day drop of $27.75 just three months after the split.
Of course, there was no iPod then. Nor a Mac mini. Nor the iTunes
Music Store or Mac OS X.
But just as these innovations have propelled Apple to fame and
fortune, they could spell its downfall, much like the iMac and Power
Mac G4 Cube in 2000. For one, the Mac mini — which has dropped
out of the Apple Store Top Sellers list — has a lot riding on
it. Apple has yet to offer any estimates and Wall Street seems to
think sales will be impressive, largely due to this so-called "iPod
halo effect."
And the shuffle, also expected to post dazzling numbers, doesn't quite
have the same profit margin as its bigger brothers: More than twice as
many shuffles need to be sold to equal the mini’s revenue.
Plus, it doesn't seem like the iPod is quite as popular as it was last
year. But that remains to be seen.
Apple's second quarter is always its most difficult. The weeks
following the holiday buying season rarely see much in the way of
sales, and with no major holidays to count on and a year's worth of
advertising to budget for, it's difficult to drum up new business. As
usual, Macworld did a fine job of creating buzz early in the quarter,
but there hasn't been much else to drum up sales, save slightly
revamped iPod and PowerBook lines.
No Power Mac, no iMac, no iBook, no Tiger pre-order… (But the third
quarter should certainly be something special.)
That is, assuming Apple lands on its feet on Wednesday. It's up to
Apple two smallest and newest products to carry the weight, lest the
stock tumbles and sends Apple back to the drawing board.
And all of us back to being underdogs.
