Today's entry on the
Google blog was altered in a subtle way. The earlier entry boasted
of their Bangalore data center, but the afternoon's version now
features the Zurich center more prominently and relegates Bangalore to
a footnote. Could it be that the company is a little less boastful in
their handling of the outsourcing debate than they thought they could
be?

03/29/2005 05:07 AMC-SPAN, the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network, was created by the
cable television industry in 1979 to bring the affairs of congress to
the public by televising the US House and Senate floor debates and
selected committees. In the last couple of years, C-SPAN has put
together an impressive collection of programming and offerings
including Internet broadcasts and full, live coverage of all

Highly-evolved race cars
06/19/2004 06:28 PMResearchers at University College London are using genetic algorithms
to evolve the best tunings for race cars. From New Scientist:
"Genetic algorithms mimic the principles of evolution to
breed solutions to a problem. A population of potential solutions is
tested for fitness and the best are cross-bred and mutated. The unfit
members of the next generation are weeded out, simulating natural
selection, leaving the fittest solutions to go on to breed."
Interestingly, the researchers tested their work
virtually through repeated games of Formula One Challenge videogame.

Metasearch Engine
03/26/2005 07:17 AMWebScales: Towards a Highly Scalable Metasearch
Enginehttp:/
/www.cs.binghamton.edu/~meng/pub.d/PIreport04.htmlThe
main objective of this collaborative project is to develop enabling
techniques for a large-scale metasearch engine that aims at covering a
much larger portion of the Web and at the same time retrieving more
up-to-date and more useful documents than existing search engines and
metasearch engines. A metasearch engine is a system that provides
unified access to multiple existing search engines. Upon receiving a
query, the metasearch engine determines the appropriate search engines
to invoke, the documents to retrieve from each invoked search engine
and finally the set of documents to be shown to the user. The main
problems to be studied in this project include (1) how to
automatically discover useful search engines on the Web; (2) how to
automatically and accurately categorize search engines into a concept
hierarchy and how to use user profiles to map user queries to
appropriate concept(s) in the hierarchy; (3) how to automatically
incorporate search engines into a metasearch engine; (4) how to
perform accurate database selection for longer queries; and (5) how to
merge results returned from multiple search engines. This has been
added to
Deep Web
Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Claim of P2P's demise highly overstated,
thoroughly debunked
06/22/2005 01:49 AMCory Doctorow:
Entertainment Media Research's bogus study on music downloading
concluded that "35% of music listeners are using legal download
services, and that the percentage will soon surpass illegal downloads,
currently at 40%." A Slashdot reader trashes the bad statistical
comparisons here, with remarkable acuity:
This is a classic example of bogus statistics. The two figures have
absolutely nothing to do with each other. The 30% of people using
legal downloads might be mutually exclusive or totally overlapping
with the 40% that use illegal downloads. The numbers need not total to
100% (and could total to more than 100%). At best we can conclude:
1. No greater than 70% of music listeners download music (legal or
illegal) -- i.e., as much as 30% of music listeners simply don't
download music.
2. No fewer than 40% of music listeners download music (legal or
illegal).
3. At most, 30% use both legal and illegal downloads.
4. It's possible (based on this limited data) that no one does both
illegal and legal downloading.
In next month's survey, both numbers could go up or down since the
survey does not ask "do you ONLY download music from legal/ illegal
sources." Moreover, the survey provides no estimates of volumes --
illegal downloaders could be downloading 10X or 10X less than their
legal-downloading counterparts. Or people that download legal music
could be the biggest "pirates" and this survey would be none the
wiser.

Highly critical exploit found in AOL
Instant Messenger
08/09/2004 01:28 PMRyan McGeehan of
TheBillyGoatCurse.com has reported a vulnerability
in AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), which potentially can be exploited by
malicious people to compromise a user's system.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the
handling of "Away" messages and can be exploited to cause a
stack-based buffer overflow by supplying an overly long
"Away" message (about 1024 bytes). A malicious website can
exploit this via the "aim:" URI handler by passing an overly
long argument to the "goaway?message" parameter.
Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code on a
user's system when e.g. a malicious website is visited with certain
browsers.
The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 5.5.3595. Other
versions may also be affected.
Various other issues were also reported, where a large amount of
resources can be consumed on a user's system.
AOL was contacted but has not responded.
