Many companies have come to favor specialized measurable education for both their employees and those they look to hire, as witness the large number of "certified" acronyms nowadays -- CCNA, MCSE, RHCE, SCSE, LPIC, ICSA. A few years ago, you couldn't find a Linux certification program anywhere. Today, with Linux showing up all over the enterprise, training and certification programs are showing up as well. In fact, three of the six acronyms above refer to Linux certifications, not the Cisco or Microsoft certifications we're used to hearing about.

HP's NX5000 Linux notebook: A breach of
the Windows wall?
09/24/2004 03:51 AM
This article is supposed to be a review of the first PC with a Linux distribution preloaded offered by a tier-one OEM to the general public. As announced during the Linux World Conference and Expo in August, the NX5000 is available -- only online at HP -- preloaded with your choice of a custom version of SUSE 9.1 or Windows XP. You can purchase the NX5000 at other online resellers, but only with Windows installed. This isn't quite the review I hoped for, but it's as close as we could get.

08/01/2004 03:30 AM
According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. Sharp CE-MR01

Sharp CE-MR01 12/27/2004 01:28 PM

This year definitely was the year of the streaming media device. Sharp is introducing a new unit in Japan early next year, called the CE-MR01, designed to stream a variety of image and movie formats over Wi-Fi. And it looks nice and all (you really can't tell with these things until you use the interface), but I can't help but wonder if they are just a flash in the pan.

DVDs are still a dominant content delivery platform for movies and television, which means everyone will need a DVD player. PVRs with hard drives are common for people with cable and satellite television. There are plenty of set-top boxes already, I'm saying. Since these streaming media devices are basically just decoding chipsets with Wi-Fi and Ethernet, why do they need to be separate units at all? I bet by this time next year, you'll be hard pressed to buy a DVD player that doesn't do streaming media from a network share.

Sharp LL-151-3D Reviewed

Sharp LL-151-3D Reviewed 12/29/2004 12:01 PM

sharpll1513d_rev.jpg imageThere's no doubt that the Sharp LL-151-3D is a cool product—3D displays without any goofy headgear is the double pluses. But are any of you guys actually using them? I can think of a few situations (medical, 3D imaging) where they'd be handy, but the 15-inch size seems a little down market for hot-to-trot medical researchers/Science Officers. And it's too expensive for gaming, costing more than most gaming PCs do in total. Anyway, just curious. There's got to be a way I can justify buying one for work.

tmo_tm200.jpg imageT-Mobile Deutschland has announced the Sharp TM200, billed as Europe's first 2-megapixel cameraphone. The tri-band GSM clam shell also has an LED flash and a built-in, SD-reading MP3 player, as well as a good-sized 262k color screen. And it has autofocus—I still can't get my head around how that works with no moving parts. It's relatively inexpensive at €150 (with contract, of course). I'm looking forward to seeing some of the images taken with its HAL-like camera.
