"Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a
patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for
application launch, which covers causing different actions to
occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of
time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period
of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of
time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?"
What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I
know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone
numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the
impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a
right mouse click if you hold down the button.

Bug-tracker spam
05/28/2004 12:37 PMI got my first bug-tracker spam today. It was just a matter of time, I
suppose. (And there was a fresh round of comments spam today.)
Spammers are the thugs of the Internet.
I’m constantly amazed by just how
bad some people are.
Maybe it’s because I’m getting farther and farther away
from my school years, when every day I interacted with a wide variety
of people. It doesn’t surprise a 12-year-old when people suck.
But me, I’m surprised.
Spammers aren’t on the same level as torturers or even
purse-stealers. But I think that, given a different context,
they’d be happy to toss some books in a bonfire in the city
square.
Update: More about Net thugs... but with a happier conclusion.

Apple III: one-click to buy = good; 20
clicks and 2 phone calls to return = bad
01/07/2004 02:42 PMBut alas, the
story is
not a completely happy one. For in addition to the iMac, I needed a
router. At first bought a Belkin router from the Apple site. (By now,
I had changed the one-click preferences to ship to my parents, so I
was able to buy the Belkin router with one click.) But then seeing
that I could get a Belkin wireless router elsewhere (of course, not on
the site selling Airports), I tried to cancel the order from Apple.
Yet when I went to return the Belkin router, life was not so simple.
There was no link in the confirming email, and it took a good routing
around on the Apple site till I found a web form to request the
canceling of an order (it was too late to call, I discovered after
calling). So literally 20 minutes after I placed the order, on
Christmas Day, I sent a request to cancel it. Today, five days later,
I received an email informing me that it was too late to cancel the
order -- which I had discovered, since my Dad called to say the router
had arrived. Twenty minutes on hold later, I received a RMA to return
the router -- of course, we pay shipping.
I wonder just what the thinking of the Apple Exec who set up this
one-click-to-buy, a million-clicks-to-fail-to-cancel system was:
"We'll make it really hard for them to cancel an order, and maybe
they'll get so frustrated, they just won't cancel it!" Yes, that is
brilliant.
Oh well, here's to the Crazy Ones.

asRep is a Perl/PHP script with a MySQL back-end
for tracking and reporting the activity of Google
AdSense ad units, which Webmasters publish, in
real- time. It tracks up to 3 ad units per page.
It reports the impressions, clicks, and CTR for
publisher domains, directories, and pages, for the
referrer domains and pages, for clicked ad URLs,
for AdSense channels, for ad unit colors and
formats, and for visitor IPs and countries. Log
reports show the details of every impression and
click. A report emailing feature is included to
periodically receive the recent reports.
Changes:
This release adds support for tracking AdSense AdLinks, a "referring
search terms" report, domain base, organization, and TLD reports, a
page base report, a meta-report feature, CSV downloading of reports,
moving averages of stats, displaying of stats as percentages of
totals,
cumulative stats for the entry point referrer, selective display of

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PMThe Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business
processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same
manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they
can't
even track the thousands of different databases and logistics
systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases
and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe
for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors
clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the
expense of our own tax dollars.

Dan Glickman's Bad First Impression
Dan Glickman's Bad First Impression
09/02/2004 03:56 AM
Well, you can be sure of one thing: there's still going to be plenty
to talk about concerning how the MPAA continues to shoot itself in the
foot now that it's under new management. Just days after everyone
went around trash
ing Jack Valenti for his clueless statements about technology, we
now have Dan Glickman, talking about how Valenti gave the MPAA
"enormous credibility" in a new interview that should give you a sense of
just how bad things are likely to get. He talks excitedly about
his experience in international trade issues in saying he wants to
"further market-opening free-trade discussions," by which he
apparently means "market shrinking, innovation killing discussions,"
as he praises the recent export
of the DMCA to Australia as somehow being a good thing. One good
thing, is that while Jack Valenti denies fair use exists, Glickman at
least seems to realize it's there -- though, only in the sense that he
hopes to kill it off. When asked about Boucher's DMCRA bill that will
help clarify fair use to make sure it's not taken away by the DMCA, he
says: "it goes way beyond what we think is necessary to protect fair
use." That's because the MPAA doesn't want to protect fair use at
all, so any protection is too much. He also goes down the ever
popular trail of saying that "piracy" is the biggest threat to the
industry, and pulls out the "it's pure, downright theft" quote while
also calling it a "plague." Of course, the Supreme Court has already
made it clear that copyrigh
t infringement is not theft, and as many times as the
entertainment industry declares it so, it does not get any closer to
being theft. As for moving the industry forward in face of these
things, he says they have a "multifaceted strategy," which includes:
"aggressive law enforcement by state and federal authorities, use of
litigation, civil litigation (and) education." Obviously embracing
new technologies, innovating, and keeping up with the times have no
place. The only bone he tosses to the tech industry is telling them
that he wants to make sure he gets to approve advances first, by
saying he wants to explore with technologies how to "permit" new
technologies to "flow and develop." There we go with the permiss
ion to innovate again. At what point did the technology industry
become some flunky to the entertainment industry where they need to
ask for permission before creating the next great technology? And,
for good measure, he makes sure we realize how important all this is
by letting us all know that "nothing creative will be produced -- in
the intellectual sense, the creative sense and in the hard-goods
sense," if our intellectual property laws change towards being more
open. Ah yes, because all those examples of innovation
and economies thriving in the absence of strong intellectual property
laws and reports showing how overly
broad intellectual property laws are slowing down innovation and
development are simply figments of our imagination. Welcome, Dan
Glickman, and good luck holding back the tide. It would be nice if
you learned to surf, instead, but you have a long legacy of clueless,
ineffective tide stopping to continue.
