Digital-home alliance tunes up

Consortium expands as it introduces guidelines for building PCs and electronics that will share digital content without hassle.

[CNet]

So here we are - it's 2004 and you'd think that Intel, Microsoft, Sony, Phillips, Samsung, LG, Matsushita would have their act together - by now. All just for UPnP. And no ZeronConf support!

But NO! They haven't had enough meetings yet.... but wait! They're firing up their flacks for some BIG announcement - oh Boy! I can't wait!

update An alliance of tech giants on Tuesday will introduce guidelines for building PCs and electronics that will share content without hassle.

As expected, the year-old Digital Home Working Group will also announce a new name, Digital Living Network Alliance, as well as release guidelines for its 145 member companies.

The guidelines create a common foundation on which to build products and thus make it easier for consumers to share and play digital content in their homes. The group is also developing a logo that companies can use to indicate that products are compatible with one other.

Many of the companies in the alliance have a vision of connecting products so that consumers can share resources at home in much the same way they might share a printer or broadband connection at work. For example, people could play digital music on their living-room stereo even though the audio files are stored on a computer in the den.

The heavyweights involved include Intel, Sony, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. The group, which was formed last June with 17 members, had missed an earlier, self-imposed deadline for creating the guidelines.

More details are expected at an event later Tuesday in San Francisco.

Digital Home Networking group. It sounds so warm and fuzzy.

HR Outsourcing: Big companies are making
the shift from in-house to outsourcing
05/31/2004 01:47 PM
According to a new study, the world’s largest companies were more inclined to outsource HR functions in 2003 than in 2002. And if they weren’t outsourcing at the time of the latest survey, most were thinking about it. Another finding: Those who are outsourcing are, for the most part, happy in their choice. However, while outsourcing increased in many areas, such as 401 K plans and call centers, it decreased slightly in recruiting. In this article, MedZilla interviews the survey’s author and reports on its findings. [PRWEB May 28, 2004]

A New Online Community in Hong Kong

A New Online Community in Hong Kong 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
As you may know, I teach each fall at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism & Media Studies Centre, helping out with a new media course led by Andrew Lih, a professor there. The student project this year is especially interesting, I think. Here's the text of a release being sent out to various folks.
Chatter Garden, an online community for news and discussion about Hong Kong regional politics and public affairs, is now live. The English language site was created as a University of Hong Kong student project for the New Media Workshop, part of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre. Visitors are encouraged to engage in online community dialogue, writing weblog entries and moderating stories. The Web site creation was directed by assistant professor Andrew Lih and visiting lecturer Dan Gillmor, author of the book, "We the Media." While Hong Kong has one of the most free media environments in East Asia and China, there are surprisingly few forums for public discourse. Chatter Garden was inspired by other online citizen journalism projects, such as OhmyNews (Korea), Malaysiakini and DailyKOS (US) to engage citizens in discussing regional public affairs. Topics include politics, economy, culture, and "One country, Two systems." Chatter Garden is named after "Chater Garden," the park next to the government Legislative Council building, and a popular gathering place for local political rallies.
I'm proud of the students' work, and hope you'll check out the site.
