Microsoft’s latest customer win has failed to impress members of the open source community, who insist that it doesn't prove that Windows is superior to Linux.
On Monday Microsoft announced that the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) had replaced its Linux Web server with a Windows alternative to save costs and improve its Web offering. "RICS's decision to migrate to Windows will see reduced costs, improved content management and integrated back-office systems with its Web portal," claimed Microsoft.

Customer focus lifts Microsoft's rating 09/13/2004 11:08 AM
Asking what customers think has helped the software giant soften its image. WHEN Microsoft raised prices for the Texas Association of Counties three years ago, no-one from the company called to explain the increase, says Steve White, the group's information technology operations manager. He says the change made him angry and he didn't think the price was reasonable. He wasn't alone. Microsoft's shift to a new licensing program in 2001 also boosted prices, without warning, for 60 per cent of its customers, according to a 2003 survey by Boston-based researcher Yankee Group. The discontent prompted Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer to look more closely at customer satisfaction with the world's largest software maker.

Since the SCO Group began threatening to sue organizations that run Linux, some commercial Linux vendors have stepped forward to assure customers that they would protect their interests should the court find in SCO's favor. While it's still an open question whether anyone will ever need such indemnification, major vendors Novell, Hewlett-Packard, and Red Hat have programs in place to protect their customers.

A Linux developer -- he prefers to remain anonymous -- has told NewsForge he was recently contacted by Microsoft and invited to a job interview. He accepted, and during the interview he asked the obvious question: Why was Microsoft interested in hiring someone with strong Linux skills? The reply was that Microsoft is working on an emulator that will allow Windows users to run Unix.
