school students
04/28/2004 12:16 AM
The Boston Globe
reports on a campaign to educate junior high school students
about copyright infringement. The campaign is led not by librarians
nor educators, but by Junior
Achievement .
At the end of the school year, students are asked to write an
essay ''to get the word out that downloading copyrighted entertainment
is illegal and unethical," according to the teachers' guide. Prizes
include an all-expenses-paid trip to Hollywood, worth about $1,000; a
Sony DVD player and library of 14 hit movies on DVDs, worth about $350
total; and a selection of 21 Hollywood classic DVDs, valued at $250.
Teachers whose students win the contest will also be rewarded with
prizes, such as a year's worth of free movie theater tickets for the
teacher and a guest.

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
05/24/2004 04:40 AMWhile the US has been notoriously tough on the idea of any online
gambling in the US, there are a number of companies doing quite well
in the somewhat "gray" area of
online games of skill for money. These aren't games of
chance, but still require players to put up money, and the winners go
home with more than they put in. The difference, of course, is that
the win is based (at least somewhat) on the skills of the players.
However, this can be a very fine line. Most games involve a mix of
skill and luck, and you can make the claim that classic gambling games
like poker and blackjack require some amount of skill as well. Still,
the online "games of skill" providers claim they're just like a
typical sports association, like the US Tennis Association, that sets
up tournaments and awards prizes to the winners - minus their own cut.
Of course, they conveniently skip over the part about where the money
comes from. With these online games, it is still a "pay to enter"
sort of contest. Either way, it's not entirely clear how the legal
issues will play out. Some states already bar such online games of
skill, but many don't. Federal laws are still unclear, and the
companies involved in this space are lobbying heavily to try to make
the point that they should be allowed to continue where online
gambling sites are forbidden.

If A High School Fears Blogging, What
Lesson Is It Teaching Students?
If A High School Fears Blogging, What
Lesson Is It Teaching Students?
03/30/2005 06:50 AMIsn't it great that our high schools are teaching students to fear new
things? It's nothing new, of course. When I was in high school,
there was a minor controversy over the fact that Walkmans were banned
from the school. The principal declared that it was the biggest
threat facing our education -- despite the very real drug problem and
disturbing weapons problem (this was before metal detectors were
common on school grounds) students faced. So, the talk last week
about
sc
hools banning iPods didn't seem all that new. It's just the same
thing, updated for a new technology. Ignore the real problem (drugs
and weapons are still making their way into schools) and focus on
something that's easy to spot: white headphones. However, sometimes
this fear of the "new" goes to bizarre extremes. While it's not quite
as bad as the various
headlines and coverage suggest, there is a school in New Jersey
that seems
to fear blogging. The headline claims that
the school has "banned blogging," but it's really just blocking a
particular blogging site (not named). The problem is the reasoning:
"blogging is not an educational use of school computers." While the
importance of "blogging" specifically is overhyped, teaching students
how to better use technology to communicate is an important skill --
and one that blogging does provide. The fact that a blogging site is
banned from the school won't stop the kids from blogging -- but it
does make the whole activity that much more enticing for them, without
any supervision. If the school were smart, it would be
encouraging blogging, while teaching kids to understand both
the risks and the benefits of communicating online. Instead, the
lesson the kids are learning is that pretending something doesn't
exist or isn't "educational" is the proper way to react to something
you don't understand.

Now We Need Two Screens To Play Games?
Now We Need Two Screens To Play Games?
01/22/2004 03:08 AMLots of folks talking about Nintendo's latest efforts to stay ahead of
the quickly approaching competition for handheld video game players.
Since all those others are trying to take the basic success of the
Nintendo Gameboy and build on that, Nintendo apparently decided to
rethink the whole concept and go in a different direction. Therefore,
they've decided to
create a gaming device that includes dual screens.
We had reported back in November the rumor that Nintendo was working
on
a
secret new product that wasn't an update to the Gameboy or to the
GameCube - and apparently this is it (and, it's not, as we had thought
it might be, their "iQue" in-between device). Of course, if you're
going to come out with a completely new, funky device, it certainly
would help to offer a picture - which they didn't. The idea is
interesting, but will require an entirely thought process in creating
games. Nintendo says the dual screens can be use to show two
different perspectives during the game, or perhaps one screen could
show a map and the other could be the in-game perspective. It
certainly opens up some possibilities, but in the gaming business, the
question is always about what software titles you have, and making it
trickier to develop software titles could slow that process down.
From the sound of things though, I think Nintendo is kidding
themselves if they think this device won't take away from Gameboy
sales. How many portable gaming devices do you really need? Also,
there's no word on whether or not this device will include any
wireless capabilities, which seems to be what many competitors are
banking on.
