DoCoMo is moving on up to Super 3G, then 4G: DoCoMo seems to have responded to the 3GPP discussions about 100 Mbps cellular networks by 2009 by talking further about its own plans. The company currently has a 3G network running W-CDMA with about 384 Kbps download and 128 Kbps upload. They plan to add HSDPA by March 2006 for 1 to 2 Mbps upload and download. Then on to Super 3G in the 2007 to 2010 framework which they anticipate providing 100 Mbps down and 50 Mbps of raw speed, which probably translates to something like 15 to 20 Mbps down and 5 to 10 Mbps up. Quite impressive, but they'll be competing against fixed WiMax and 802.11n Wi-Fi clouds by that point. DoCoMo says Super 3G is mostly a software upgrade, which makes it a more feasible migration path. Finally, starting in 2010, DoCoMo will roll out 4G with 1 Gbps downlink speeds. It all sounds very pretty on paper, but DoCoMo has managed to execute in the past on high-speed cellular technology that has sounded slightly ludicrously ahead of its time until they launched it....

I'm in Santa Clara for the MySQL conference. The hotel is approximately in the middle of nowhere. Vani was supposed to be here too, but we're not quite ready to board the crazy new dog yet. (Must post pictures soon). There are at least 4 apple stores within 15 miles, but they are all ~$25-30 cab fare away. I forgot to bring an Airport Express, but I don't miss it that much. I got here yesterday after all the sessions...

First up is the MacDesign Conference, which will be held June 2-4 in Chicago and attract photographers, graphic designers, digital video editors and other Mac-using creative types. Joiner notes that Apple User Group Advisory Board member Lesa Snider will host a Birds-of-a-Feather gathering at 7 p.m. on June 2, offering user group members and leaders the opportunity to meet in an informal atmosphere.
