Tom Coates, bored defender of webl0gs... 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

I don't know whether it's articles like these (on why people give up weblogs) that I get annoyed by or responses like this from 2lmc, but either way I'm pissed. I don't know how obvious it has to be before people get it - lots of people have weblogs and find value in them, and - yes - lots of people don't! This is a shock to precisely no one! Moreover, there has never been anything on the web that some people have liked and some haven't. Every single online community, bulletin board, mailing-list, online social-networking tool, web-application or published site ever made has had people who start using them and then stop. There's even an industry word for it: "churn".

Getting three people's comments on why they don't read BBC News might be an interesting read but it wouldn't be a story. It wouldn't reveal anything particularly good or ill about BBC News. And anyone who was seriously using such a piece to illustrate their own counter-factual hobby-horse would just look highly selective in their source material, slightly duplicitous in their arguments or basically a bit stupid. Why is this any different?

Kid Rock To Play Bush Inauguration ... The Bush Twins have invited Kid Rock to play their inauguration bash after their father is sworn in to a second term. Rock also played the Republican National Convention. This is a guy who stuck his head through an American flag at the Superbowl and has lyrics that say all women are whores and extol drug and alcohol abuse. (The link has actual lyrics from Rock, so if you are offended by cursing don't follow it.)

Faith Online

Faith Online: 64% of Wired Americans Have Used the Internet for Spiritual or Religious Purposes
http://ww w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=119

64% of the nation’s 128 million Internet users have done things online that relate to religious or spiritual matters:

- Nearly two-thirds of the adults who use the Internet in the United States have used the Internet for faith-related matters. That represents nearly 82 million Americans. Among the most popular and important spiritually-related online activities: 38% of the 128 million Internet users have sent and received email with spiritual content.
- 35% have sent or received online greeting cards related to religious holidays.
- 32% have gone online to read news accounts of religious events and affairs.
- 21% have sought information about how to celebrate religious holidays.
- 17% have looked for information about where they could attend religious services.

This figure represents a substantially higher number of online religious faith seekers than the Pew Internet & American Life Project has measured before. We used a new battery of questions to prompt Internet users’ recollections of the things they do online related to spiritual activities. Those who use the Internet for religious or spiritual purposes are more likely to be women, white, middle aged, college educated, and relatively well-to-do.
