04/29/2004 09:20 AMInsultingly Stupid Movie Physics is a very good physics primer in the
guise of a very funny critique of the ways that Hollywood bends the
laws of physics when it makes movies.
Saying that shards of broken glass are razor sharp is an
understatement. A shattered window contains thousands of incredibly
sharp edges and dagger-like points. It takes almost no force for one
of these points or edges to cause a laceration. However, people in
movies routinely jump through plate glass windows without receiving a
single scratch.
Broken glass has at least two mechanisms for slashing a person diving
through a window: its weight and its inertia. First, large heavy
shards of glass can fall like guillotines, slicing off body parts.
Second, when a person jumps or, even worse, drives a motorcycle
through a window, the shards of glass tend to stay in place due to
their inertia. The only way to move them is to apply a force. If the
person's body provides this force by pushing on the edge of a piece of
glass, it can slice right through clothing, skin, and flesh. In the
real world, jumping or driving through a plate glass window would be
suicidal.
There are individuals who have accidentally fallen through windows
without sustaining serious injuries. There are also people who have
survived the Ebola virus. However, in both cases the odds are not
particularly good.

Apple Patents iPod Acceleration Detector
Apple Patents iPod Acceleration Detector
12/25/2004 05:18 PM
According to this
article posted yesterday on CNET, Apple has applied for a patent on
technology which would allow an iPod (or other device) to detect when
it is falling and shut down the hard drive, minimizing the potential
damage to drive and data due to impact. How soon this technology will
find its way into the iPod, assuming it ever does, is unknown.
Considering that IBM has deployed similar technology in its ThinkPads,
I wouldn't be surprised if it appears within the next generation or
two.

While Longhorn will be breaking some new grounds in GUI when it is
released (eyeroll),
I am afraid the Longhorn GUI team is too focused on the 'look' and
not enough on the
'feel'. Onscreen objects should not only look great, but also
feel right.
If an object looks heavy, it should feel heavy when I am pressing
on it or moving
it around. If the surface of an object looks rubbery or
plastic-like, objects
behave accordingly when objects are dropped on it. GUI
designers have forgotten
about physics, something game programmers have not.
Unfortunately, there aren't any physics engines for GUI available
today and it would
take more than a patch to retrofit existing game physics engine for
GUI. I hope
someone writes one so onscreen objects can exhibit real world
properties like momentum,
collision effects, elasity, etc. There is also the sound to
consider but, until
affordable sound projection technologies becomes readily available,
noise will be
too much to bear in typical office environments.

David Pescovitz:
British bookmaker Ladbrokes is now accepting wagers on the future of
physics. They've opened a book on:
* Understanding the origin of cosmic rays by 2010 (4/1
odds)
* The ATLAS experiment at CERN finding the Higgs Boson by 2010 (6/1
odds)
* The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO)
detecting gravitational waves by 2010 (10/1 odds)
* Building a fusion power station by 2010 (100/1 odds)
Anyone can place bets on these breakthroughs during the next two
weeks. Apparently, New Scientist magazine is also involved in the
gamble, dedicating ten pages to it in the print edition.
“I’d be tempted to take a bet on the Higgs at
6-1,” says Brian Foster who heads the particle physics group at
the University of Oxford in the UK. “I’ve been quite
instrumental in betting the taxpayers’ money on us finding it,
so I’d better put my money where my mouth
is.”
