Microsoft has met its self-imposed deadline to deliver Community Technology Previews of Avalon and Indigo to Microsoft Developer Network subscribers. Last month Microsoft told attendees of the VSLive conference that it would deliver the bits designed for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 before the end of March.

Over the weekend, Microsoft posted the "Indigo" and "Avalon" community technology previews for free to anyone with the bandwidth to download them. Previously, the pre-beta versions of the two Windows subsystems for Windows Longhorn, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 had been available only to MSDN subscribers. "This CTP release recently became available to MSDN subscribers and is now being released to the general public in response to numerous requests," Microsoft noted on its download page.

Microsoft made good on its commitment to deliver pre-beta previews of its Windows "Indigo" communications subsystem (its first) and its "Avalon" presentation subsystem (its second) by the end of March. Indigo and Avalon are the codenames for two strategic developer technologies that Microsoft plans to ship in 2006 as part of the Windows "Longhorn" operating system. In addition, Microsoft is making these technologies available on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The Indigo and Avalon Community Technology Preview (CTP) enables developers to experiment with early builds of these technologies, get acquainted with the development experience, and provide Microsoft with feedback. The U.S. government will not get a head start on other Windows users when it comes to Microsoft (Quote, Chart) security updates, the company said Friday in response to news report that suggested otherwise. The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. Air Force will receive early versions of software patches through Microsoft's Update Validation Program (SUVP) and those fixes will be forwarded to other agencies through the Department of Homeland Security. But according to Microsoft, officials from the Redmond, Wash., software giant and the Air Force have met in recent weeks with officials from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the DHS to discuss the best practices established by the Air Force after a recent five-year $500-million deal inked in November.
