Periodic Table of the Elements Table
Periodic Table of the Elements Table
12/03/2002 11:46 AMThis is
probably one of, if not the coolest thing I have seen
in a while. Theodore Gray,
president of the company that makes
Mathematica,
is quite a cool dude, and his Periodic Table of
the Elements Table is definitely the cat's ass of tables (if you
know what i mean). While you are at it, check out his Sodium
Party. I found this site from reading Ben Hammersley.com. Neat
stuff.

TABLE vs CSS
TABLE vs CSS
05/27/2004 10:46 AMTables Vs. CSS
- A Fight to the Death: So which is better — building page
layouts using TABLE tags or using DIVs and CSS? This guy set out to
find out. He built the same site both ways, and documented the
experience and results.
On Table-based design... I've seen that design in every browser I
can, under Linux, Windows and Macintosh platforms, and it looks
practically the same. It's rock solid. Score one for the tables.
On CSS-based Design…Building the design in CSS felt much better.
The immediacy of the changes and clarity of the code made me feel more
in control of the process. [...] There are significant savings in
bandwidth, too. [...] Keeping the layout information apart from the
content also provides all sorts of benefits.
In the end, he picked CSS, although I was concerned with some of
the browser rendering problems he displays. Like TABLEs or not, they
are incredibly stable in the face of different browsers and
platforms.
I can go either way. I use CSS for major page layout, but I've
been known to slap things in table now and again — every
situation is different, and you really need to use the method that
gives you the results you want at that particular time.

The
Orange 22 design studio is promoting their new Aurora cocktail table,
a pleasing LED-lit piece of furniture with the look of a giant,
glowing Life Saver. By rubbing the touch-pad on the lower lip of the
Aurora, you can change the hue, brightness, or "animation" of the
'Pixcell' lights inside the translucent acrylic table. If you're
already going to spend the $3,600 price for the table, though, you
might as well add in the $300 wireless remote, as well.

I kept looking for a greater
meaning or purpose to this Table Mirror with an integrated LCD panel
in it (reflecting, you might say), but nope, that's pretty much the
whole deal. And it looks like it's a TV-resolution screen, too, not a
PC-resolution one, so I wouldn't expect to sneak in a rowdy round of
Quicken while you're preening.

Big penis on the table (or not)
Big penis on the table (or not)
08/11/2004 12:08 PM

This vintage medical model of a
human penis is up for
auction on eBay right now. Manufactured by Carolina Biological Supply
Company (still a wonderful
company), circa 1950s, the model
is 22.5" long and 15" tall. Starting bid at just $275.
Link (Thanks, Michael-Anne!)
UPDATE: If you thought that penis head was a
bit pointy and odd looking, you were onto something.
Dr. Matthew Vaughn says:
"Unfortunately, the 'male penis' model is actually a model of the
ro
ot tip of a modern vascular plant. Now given the Australian slang
for a quick romp between the sheets (a root), BoingBoing's posting
isn't ALL that far from the mark, but it is, nevertheless, factually
incorrect."

Atkins.com: Lose the Table Fat
Atkins.com: Lose the Table Fat
01/16/2004 01:02 PMDisclaimer: Those sick of hearing about Atkins® may not want to
read this. Atkins.com has a bunch of recipes. They are reasonably easy
to find with a search or by browsing. There's also a recipe box. The
recipe box forgot to to add things half of the time, and when I
returned a week later, it had forgotten all my recipes. It has a phase
1 (or induction) choice if you browse their recipes. Great. It has 267
Phase 1 recipes (as of Jan. 12 2003). But there's no way to search
WITHIN those Phase 1 recipes. (Phase 1 is the phase in which you must
eat fewer than 20 grams of carbs a day. ) Why wasn't I just using the
search engine? That's because the first time I tried, there were no
recipes responding to the search 'Phase 1'; the second time I searched
a week later, there were 34 matches, of which (3) three had phase 1 in
their titles: all the others had another phase label, or no phase
label. Useless! Oh, and when you do go browse 267 recipes
alphabetically, page numbers are just as useless. I need a yellow
pages A-B, C, D-E listing style. Instead, I'm guessing at where the S
recipes might be and clicking on page numbers. And finally, the site
is often painfully slow. This is probably mostly due to the
overwhelming popularity of Atkins right now, but the bloated
table-based layout, with tiny fonts done as graphics that could easily
be done as text, can't help....

Symbol Table Manipulation
Symbol Table Manipulation
03/19/2005 02:39 AMOne of the most dramatic advantages of dynamic languages is that they
provide access to the symbol table at run-time, allowing new functions
and variables to spring into existence as you need them. Though
they're not always the right solution to common problems, they're very
powerful and useful in certain circumstances. Phil Crow demonstrates
how and when and why to manipulate Perl's symbol table.

Zero-g Robotics on an Air Hockey Table
05/28/2004 03:48 PMWei-Min Shen and other
researchers from the USC Polymorphic Robotics Lab have been
looking for a way to simulate zero-g robotics so they can develop
autonomous robots that can assemble orbiting solar power stations and
do
other useful work in space. Their solution? Small robots called
"pucks"
that hover on a conventional air-hockey table. A new Nature article
summarizes their work. The USC PRL website offers video of the puck
robots at work including pucks assembling
scale girders (MPEG), docking with each
other (MPEG), and autonomously

Chris
Cardinal—Hopefully carved from the finest anodized
aluminum by nude Pagan witches or something, the Oskar Table Lamp
delivers in areas other $465 dollar lamps fall hopelessly
short. Groundbreaking features include its ability to "fit in compact
spaces", and also provide "multi-directional lighting for tasking".
It gets better:
Able to stand alone or function as a
bookend, the best-selling design stays fixed while multidirectional
lighting is provided with a flexible metal arm and fully rotating
aluminum reflector.
While many other lamps (or bookends)
may also provide an "integrated toggle switch for turning the lamp on
and off," we challenge you to find one that has been blessed in
ancient Triskelion Rite Of Tea rituals to ensure the unrelenting favor
of the Sun. In fact, it's probably not this one, either.
Bulb not included.

When I was doing my Sofware Engineering for Large Scale PHP
Applicationspresentation for PHPCon, I sent out an email for help to
roughly 10 strong, talented, practical engineers I know and respecting
saying "Help !!!". They all came back with good tips (thanks again)
and one of those tips helped me a lot this weekend. I was doing some
fairly serious sql table design over the weekend for a MySQL database
on early Saturday morning. One of those points was this:
Represent data as best for the computer, not for yourself (from
Apokalyptik)
I had cobbled together a fairly complex structure but then I wrote
down a bunch of queries I need to run against it and then ordered
those queries by frequency and that helped me restructure it a lot.
Thanks Man!

Tavelland River Table
Tavelland River Table
08/20/2004 08:05 AM
You know that Frank Lloyd Wright house that has the
creek running through it? Think of this as the Brooklyn version of
that, except instead of building a house over the sewer drain you just
get a fancy table. Plus it's not designed by FLW, but Oliver Beckert,
and it's not exactly a one-of-a-kind. If you've got the $4,300
or so to purchase this "Tavelland" table, they'll be happy to
build-to-order one for you by hand. The 'river' flows across the
surface of the table continually, but it doesn't say how deep it is -
or how many fish you could get in there.
