second "annual" meeting, to be precise. He's director of Microsoft's
Shared Source Initiative and I introduced you all to him last summer
(see "A free lunch with Microsoft",

at the Open Source Conference. This time around, the venue was the
Open Source Business Conference, held at San Francisco's St. Francis
Hotel.

CA Moves
with New Open-Source Licensing for Content, Database Projects.
This article has some dangerous flaws. Proprietary/open source
dual-licensing can be done with the GPL; just look at
MySQL. (I see
the Plone Foundation themselves
are fighting this bad reporting.) Also, Apache is not
dual-licensed and IBM could have used it just as easily if it wasn't
owned by the ASF, because the
Apache License
is so permissive. (Also, companies that create gratuitous new open
source licenses are not on the Cluetrain, but at least it's not
dangerous.)

What proprietary software can teach open

04/12/2005 08:04 AMBeing the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know
of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly,
popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit
of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of
open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity
or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the
right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software
without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.

terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification,
addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and
privileges that we associate with open source software.

06/24/2004 12:49 PMMicrosoft Corp. says it is looking to turn over more of its programs
to open-source software developers, playing a greater role in a
process that the Redmond company has criticized strongly at times in
the past.
Money-makers like the company's Windows operating system and Office
productivity suite aren't on the table -- or anywhere near it.
But the company has so far released two software-development tools to
the open-source community, and it wants to continue the practice, a
Microsoft platform manager told an industry group this week.
