ProNet: LiveJournal Hacks 03/19/2005 02:53 AM

Brad's been active with a cool little LiveJournal hack, inspired by the buzz around tags at this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, where he displays LiveJournal's interests in a new variable-sized tag-style display, instead of the years-old sorted list. Pretty....

LiveJournal and Six Apart

LiveJournal and Six Apart 01/06/2005 02:00 AM

Sorry I couldn't say anything before, but the rumors are true. Six Apart has acquired Danga, the company that runs LiveJournal.

See the press release, the FAQ, the post Mena's Corner and Brad LJ for more info. So I guess I better clean learn bml and make my LJ look a bit better.

On Six Apart and Livejournal... 01/06/2005 07:10 AM

So Six Apart have bought Livejournal after all. Here's a brief story about how I didn't find out about it... I was chatting to Mena yesterday about something else and couldn't resist querying her about the rumours. Very patiently, and I suspect with some kind of tiny smile just about visible on her concealed-by-IM face, Mena politely informed that she didn't respond to rumours and speculation. To which the only real response was, "If you won't respond, will Anil?"

I didn't get a direct answer to that question, but I did promise to let Mena know if Anil spilled the beans. I figure she'd want to give him a present or a bunch of flowers or something. She's so nice. But then I forgot to ask him anyway. And so it goes...

Anyway, the news was announced relatively late last night as far as I can tell, which means that those of us on this side of the Atlantic probably heard about it before most of the US webloggers. Mena's done a comprehensive write-up on Mena's Corner - as has Brad on his Livejournal. They're both pretty excited about the acquisition - and I think with good reason. There are people who aren't so sure about the whole thing - and I think their anxieties are pretty reasonable (Danah's post on the subject in probably one of the best), but I really think there are more opportunities here than problems. Bringing Livejournal into the weblogging fold (or bringing weblogs closer into the Livejournal fold) could be tremendously interesting. I'd be interested to see whether there was any further development of Livejournal-style networking and social networking stuff. It would seem to have lots of possibilities (and even webloggers love this stuff - check out their adoration of Flikr if you don't believe me). And if it was possible to bring some of that overt social stuff over into MT or Typepad - by cross-platform protocols or whatever - then I can't help but think that would be a good thing. I'm also really interested in the role of Typekey in all of this stuff.

The real threat is, I think, not that Livejournal's community is put under threat, but that their understated aesthetic has a kind of punk-cool and authenticity that could be polished out of existence by the really terribly good designers at SixApart. Livejournal has the feel of a grass-roots, bottom-up, wildly successful community project, where MT, Blogger et al kind of don't. The slightly ramshackle look-and-feel is a core part of that, I think.

Anyway, all in all a pretty interesting day for webloggery and Livejournalhood. I'm really interested in how Blogger fits into all this though. At the moment, it's pretty clear that the fire and the dynamism is with SixApart. They're the people innovating (at least publically). Which leaves me with two questions (1) are Blogger becoming also-rans or (2) what the hell are they planning?

PS. Latest rumour I heard was that SixApart were going to acquire the previously-public sector, non-weblog-producing national-broadcaster of the UK, the BBC. The move is expected to incraese their staffing levels from something like 70 people to something more like 35,000! Ok, maybe I made that last bit up...

Tha t is big news. I did not realize that LiveJournal.com, a blogging service with 5.5 million bloggers, is based on open source software. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Will SixApart work to foster the continued development of the open source LiveJournal software or will it instead focus harvesting paying users for it's TypePad service?

LiveJournal Bought Out

LiveJournal Bought Out 01/06/2005 09:19 AM
LiveJournal, the blogging site, has been bought up by Six Apart, the company behind the MovableType weblog software. The buy-out will see staff working with Danga, the company which previously owned LiveJournal, move to San Francisco to work with the new owners.

LiveJournal's creator, Brad Fitzpatrick, said the move will mean "nothing earth-shattering" for the existing service. However, users are to get access to trackback for the first time. "They're not buying the site to spam you, screw you, destroy the community, or convert you en masse to their other paid services," Fitzpatrick said. "They just want to double our efforts and have a part in all types of blogging. "

Six Apart CEO, Barak Berkowitz, added: "We are now the only company to offer the full range of weblogging tools to the market," he said. "We welcome LiveJournal users to the Six Apart family, and promise to keep the LiveJournal culture and quality which has earned their devotion."

Fitzpatrick promised development of LiveJournal will continue after the move; prices would not rise and free accounts would not be scrapped, he said. Since it started up five years ago, LiveJournal has built up a community of over five million users - it currently claims to have just short of 2.5 million actively-updated blogs on its servers.

Sixapart buying LiveJournal?

Sixapart buying LiveJournal? 01/04/2005 11:55 PM
Xeni Jardin: There are rumors on the internets that Six Apart just bought / is buying / will soon buy LiveJournal. Details as they come.

Update: Om Malik has more:

Six Apart, the parent company behind hosted blogging service TypePad, and Moveable Type is about to acquire Live Journal, for an undisclosed amount. The deal is a mix of stock and cash, and could be announced sometime later this month, according to those close to the two companies. If the deal goes through, then Six Apart will become one of the largest weblog companies in the world, with nearly 6.5 million users. It also gives the company a very fighting chance against Google’s Blogger and Microsoft’s MSN Spaces.

Six Apart buys Livejournal - confirmed

Six Apart buys Livejournal - confirmed 01/06/2005 09:23 AM
The rumours have been flying around for a while, but Joi confirms them now: Six Apart (makers of Movable Type and Typepad) has acquired Danga, the company that runs Livejournal. This means that over 6.5 million bloggers will be under the Six Apart umbrella.

This is pretty big. This essentially creates a tripod structure in the blog world - the Six Apart users, the Blogger users, and the non-affiliated rest (essentially Wordpress, Nucleus, the smaller blog hosts like qlogger, etc). So far MSN Spaces and AOL Journals don't seem to be playing.

Blogging is no longer a small game: There are now more Six Apart users now than there are people in Finland. And frankly, it seems that on the average the bloggers are a smarter bunch than the general population over here. *grin*

So, if a population of five million people brought you Linux and Nokia and Esa-Pekka Salonen (and plenty of others), what could do the Six Apart crowd do?

LiveJournal announces sale to Six Apart

LiveJournal announces sale to Six Apart 01/06/2005 01:54 AM
Xeni Jardin: It's official. LiveJournal founder Brad Fitzpatrick says:
Why is Six Apart buying LiveJournal? Lots of reasons:

* Our companies are more alike than different.
* We both use Perl.
* Together we form super robot that's stronger than the sum of its parts.
* Super robots can fight super companies.
* They respect us, we respect them.
* We have a number of features they don't.
* We have experience with making "inward-facing" community sites, whereas their sites/products tend to be "outward-facing". They want some of that inward-facing action.
* Because we're awesome.

What does this mean for LiveJournal? Nothing earth-shattering. LiveJournal development and support will continue, and will probably even accelerate, as we grow the team. We'll continue to work on speed, reliability, and new features. LiveJournal won't become paid-user-only or anything crazy like that. We're not going to raise prices. We're not going to cancel permanent accounts, etc, etc. And we're not going to spam or sell your information. You own your journals, not us. Really you shouldn't see any negative changes. The most immediate changes will be that we'll start to get prettier... more styles, themes, etc. Six Apart is really good at that and we're not.

Lin k to announcement. (thanks marginalia and Perian)
