Microsoft, Yahoo Issue Responses to
Gmail Challenge
06/21/2004 10:39 AMResponding to the impending public release of Google's Gmail service,
which is offering users a full gigabyte (1 GB) of email storage space,
Microsoft's MSN Hotmail and Yahoo's Mail service are both dramatically
increasing their storage allotments. Yahoo's updated service debuted
late last week, but Microsoft's planned update should be available
soon. Yahoo Mail can't quite match Gmail's 1 GB offering, but the
service has made a dramatic jump from the previous 4 MB limitation to
100 MB, which Yahoo executives say should be enough for most users.
"What we are trying to do is take storage off the table as an issue,"
said Yahoo vice president Brad Garlinghouse, noting that Yahoo
previously charged users $60 a year for 100 MB of storage. Yahoo also
raised the email attachment size limit from 3 MB to 10 MB, and the
company now offers only one paid upgrade package: For $20 a year,
users can upgrade to a whopping 2 GB of storage space. Users who pay
for Yahoo Mail will also see no graphical ads, the company says.

points out:
"Although Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides fixes for many of
Internet Explorer's persistent security flaws, it does little or
nothing about spyware, where "free" software adds code to your system
that can capture keystrokes, monitor e-mail and IM traffic, and send
the resulting data back to the invader's home base without your
knowledge."

Internet Week reports that while Microsoft is working to
“protect” users from viruses and spyware, there is little
it can do for those that are already affected. It is great to see
Microsoft take an active stance regarding spyware and virus removal,
but how about spending some those billions on the mainstream media so
that the non-techies have a chance to learn that Service Pack 2 even
exists. Most people I deal with don’t even…

04/30/2004 09:10 AMIt's the newest computer security problem to attract the attention of
Congress: spyware, or software designed to collect computer users'
personal data without their knowledge. Secretly piggybacking on
downloaded Internet software, spyware transmits information about
computer usage and generates pop-up advertisements and other
annoyances. It often is difficult to uninstall.

01/03/2005 12:44 PMMicrosoft have just finished distributing an internal Beta 1 escrow
build to internal beta testers. "Atlanta" is the code-name
for Microsoft's rehashed GIANT Software Anti-Spyware. In a memo
internally, the company looks clear to distribute the software this
coming Thursday calling it "new, it's fresh, and it's all
good".
Encouraging employees to install the Beta is one of the many ways
tests Beta products internally. It's not clear whether the release
this Thursday will be a public beta or a private external beta.
