magic_ar_book.jpgA few folks in New Zealand have developed the next natural evolution of an old children's staple: the bedtime story. The book reads like a normal book, if desired, but when accompanied with a handheld (or head-based) display and computer vision tracking technology, the story comes to life in front of them. In another example of augmented reality bringing us really cool stuff, the director of the lab working on the project tells us "You can see animated virtual characters overlaid on the real book pages and hear the voice of [the narrator] reading the story." Technology Review's article explains what's keeping this technology from coming to market, at least for now, and when we might see it outside of the lab setting.

Augmented Reality uses computer graphics that are placed over the “real world” in front of the person viewing it. It is the latest thing in mapping technology, allowing you to see it from the map’s perspective.

Cory Doctorow: Total Immersions has an "augmented reality" tool called D'Fusion Technology, as demonstrated in the Windows Media (ugh) video-stream (ugh) linked from the page below. It's pretty stunning: real people and objects are captured with video cameras and then three-dimensional virtual objects are seamlessly matted in, so that the demonstrator appears to be holding a bouquet of flowers that turns into a lightsaber, then a helicopter flies over the audience, etc. The gaming applications are pretty rad -- think of EyeToy with about a thousand times more granularity and interaction. Cory Doctorow: Pablos sez, "This I Love Bees thing seems to be getting out of hand. It is some kind of massive alternate reality game that may be related to Halo 2. The site has been counting down to August 24th and now it looks like it is heading into meatspace. Now there are all these GPS coordinates where people are planning to go to all over the U.S. on Tuesday. There's all kinds of speculation about it on these forums and in #beekeepers on irc.chat-solutions.org. Anyway, the gargantuan scale of this thing makes me want to check it out if only for the bizarre flashmob appeal." (Thanks, Pablos!)

Familiarity Breeds Trust Online

Familiarity Breeds Trust Online 12/23/2003 06:56 PM
Familiarity apparently breeds trust online. As people become used to the internet they're no longer afraid to use it for all sorts of activities, and include it as part of their everyday life. Thus, early online fears about how no one would ever use their credit cards online are pretty much forgotten - even though the risk of having your credit card number exposed has gone up. People now consider the internet to just be a part of how they live now, and don't think of it as new or different any more. That is, of course, good for internet businesses, but not so good for those concerned about online risks - which could explain the rise in identity theft. There are a lot more "easy" targets, it seems.

After spending 10 years living and working in Colorado Springs as a highly successful computer professional, Greg Stoutenburg never could have imagined that his career would come to a screeching halt as the victim of an unexpected layoff. But then again, he never could have imagined that this very same layoff would become the catalyst to ignite a new career as the proprietor of his own business. Now Stoutenburg no longer fears pink slips, because he has just opened a new franchise with Geeks On Call® -- the nation’s premier provider of on-site computer support. [PRWEB Sep 19, 2004]

No glasses are necessary and the black box contains an optical system and patented software to project the images in front of you. Similar technology could easily be adapted for use in museums and anywhere else that floating, animated images are welcome. The company's site isn't coming up, so for now, we'll link to the WMMNA article.

Animated LED Watch 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

led_knight_rider_watch.jpgEvincing the fondest memories of KIT from Knight Rider, the TS100 from Cyber Punk is an LED watch featuring a mirrored face and several different scrolling effects on its LED grid. The grid consists of 90 LEDs, and when you press the button they do their little dance and "fade away", leaving illuminated what remaining lights are required to tell you the time (or date). Completely stainless steel, they're available for import now from TokyoFlash for roughly $140 including shipping, "because you are a rebel!" An animated graphic on the catalog page gives you a good idea of how it works.

Animated subversion from within? 06/08/2004 08:51 AM
These educational cartoons about the upcoming G8 conference are easily some of the worst pieces of animation ever to be considered "educational." Could they be an attempt to create animated subversion from within? Or is it just par for the course when the government tries to sell the G8 to the youth of America? Oh, and if you like the cartoon, try testing your G8 IQ.

Woodring animated

Woodring animated 08/17/2004 01:25 PM
frank Ever since I interviewed artist Jim Woodring back in 1995 for the bOING bOING Happy Mutant Handbook, I've been enamored with his surreal comix inspired by his childhood hallucinations and "psychological malfunctions." Now, Taruto Fuyama has animated Woodring's Frank character in a beautiful piece that somehow manages to perfectly express the dreamy tone and emotion of the comic. (Someone else's attempt here.) Fuyama won a Prize of Excellence for the work in the Japan Media Arts Festival. The animation is online in Real format. From the "Reason for the Award":
"...the greatest appeal of this work is that it had successfully expressed unique "newness" by combining 3D-CG and classical cartoon-like design. Alien creatures created by pasting comic frames to 3D-CG in a Gothic manner generate uncomfortable feelings, and these uncomfortable feelings that color the entire work feature this work's contemporary sensitivity."

Animated Figures Available In Canada

Animated Figures Available In Canada 05/07/2004 03:24 AM
Even though they are a Target exclusive below the border, the Animated Clone Wars figures seem to be fair game here in Canada. Sadly, the traditional distribution problems here are again preventing Hasbro Canada from getting these little gems into our grubby little hands. The toy company isn’t to blame this time (or so it would seem) since they are currently being solicited on their retailer’s only web site. Thankfully, a North Vancouver toyshop, Big Pete’s, has noticed this oversight and has ordered a large quantity of the line. That being said, Canadians looking to avoid a large secondary market sting and potential Customs charges need only drop Pete a line.
