Sony QUALIA 005 TV
08/19/2004 07:12 PM
Sony today announced the "QUALIA 005," in their WEGA series of
LCD TVs, which is the world's first television to use Light Emitting
Diodes (LEDs) as a backlight. BUT WHY? According to Sony, this 46"
television has the most realistic color reproduction of any set EVER.
I'd certainly hope so too, considering it will set you back more than
$10,000 USD.
Features on this new set don't stop there, however - Sony managed
to cram in their Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer (of PS2 fame)
for better image rendering, as well as their "DRC-MFv2"
standard-TV-to-HDTV upscaler we reported on just last week. Another
bizarro feature inserted in an attempt to justify the 10G pricetag is
usage of the "XMB" (Cross Media Bar) GUI, which is currently used on
the PSX. I complain about prices a lot, but who am I kidding? I'd get
one if I was stinking rich, which I certainly plan to be.

New York Sony Qualia Store Opens
09/23/2004 11:08 AM
Sony's Qualia store finally opened today in Manhattan,
the first retail outlet on our shores of Sony's high-end luxury brand.
I had a chance to check out the store a few weeks ago and was, well, a
little let down. It's not entirely Qualia's fault though; who decided
the best place to stick a high-end retail presence was in the back
basement corner of an existing Sony store?
More impressions after the jump.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.
The next Sony?
The next Sony?
11/05/2003 01:24 PMSamsung has big ambitions in consumer electronics, but first it must
overhaul a brand better known for low-end microwaves. It's up to Eric

There's a boatload more images from the Tokyo Game Show
coming through (more than just that remote, I'm saying), although
they're mostly just shots of the PSP. I thought this one was precious,
though. No word if Sony plans to sell all PSPs with an attached girl
on a chain.
Allegedly there are 44 PSPs available for play at TGS, and one
thing the author of this article
pointed out is that the demonstration units were all playing games -
there were no demo units playing video (unlike at E3).

Whatever happened to Joi talking some sense into them?
Sony
Gets Stupider.
Unbelievably,
Sony seems to be getting more clueless as time passes. Clueless about
digital music. Clueless about consumer experience. Clueless about
values. A week after launching the horrible Connect music service
which seeks to turn the musty MiniDisc into the next iPod, Sony has released its first
branded music portable, the Vaio Pocket VGF-AP1. 20 gigs, a nice
screen which can display album art, and a touch-sensitive panel. All
well and good. Except
this private-format little devil plays
*only* ATRAC3 files thats Sonys proprietary
music-file format. You heard me. It doesnt play MP3s. Using
bundled software, you can convert MP3 to ATRAC3 for playback in the
Vaio Pocket.
Please understand my vitriol toward Sony, and why I think the
companys music products are worthy of boycott. If it were a
simple matter of Sony being clueless, we could merely laugh at it. The
infuriating part is that Sony believes the consumer is clueless. Sony
believes that we should forsake the de facto standard of music files
(MP3), with its gargantuan installed footprint, in order to bless our
lives with Sonys format and Sonys hardware. The arrogance
is breathtaking and insulting. Even Apple, second-place winner of the
Arrogance Prize, allows plain MP3s into the iPod.
Sonys pathetic Connect service will be crushed by consumer
indifference. The Vaio Pocket will be granulated by the erosive power
of a smart marketplace. And, if there be a technology god, Sony will
sink into the dinosauric quicksand, never to torment us with its
foolishness again.

Portable gaming nerds hungry for any scraps of
information about Sony's upcoming PSP handheld might want to talk a
look at ConsoleConspiracy, where they've cribbed some notes from
today's "Programming the PSP" talk at the Austin Game Conference.
Nothing particularly sticks out at the moment, although they do
confirm that the 7.1 surround sound out thing was just a weird rumor.
Oh, and the PSP will be able to hook directly to a PC via USB 2.0;
that could have some interesting ramifications, if none other than
convenience.

Oh
Sony, when you aren't acting like a blind, lumbering bastard of a
company sometimes I almost want to give you a big bear hug. Like when
you make something like this new Cybershot DSC-M1 - there's no reason
for it, you just decided to get funky, and let the engineers
take a long, deep pull off the pipe before starting to design it. It's
not the specs that really get me, I guess - it's just a 5.1-megapixel
camera that scrounges parts from the DSC-T1 - it's just all the weird
features, like the four shutter buttons and dual-microphone stereo
sound recording. And the new MPEG4 video implementation (although in
truth, I really don't care much about solid-state camcorders, at least
not using expensive Memory Sticks).

Sony VAIO M
Sony VAIO M
09/13/2004 09:00 AM
Sony has a new one of those desktop VAIOs designed
to replace a TV, this time called the VAIO M. It's not that
spectacular, features-wise, with the notable stand-out of a
"Multidrive" super-burner that can handle not only DL (dual-layer)
DVDs but DVD-RAM as well (if you don't know what that is, you probably
don't need to). It has a horrible 32MB video card, though, and the
form factor makes it impossible to upgrade - it's basically a laptop
in desktop clothing - but that's not what it was designed for anyway.
It's a neat form factor, but I don't think I'd ever buy one.

Sony = Pathetic
Sony = Pathetic
05/04/2004 10:57 AMThis is so typical Sony - it's pathetic.
Back in the early 90's - when over 40% of the Mac was built of Sony
components we were all SURE they'd buy Apple. And have you ever
heard of or seen ImageStation or
ScreenBlast? Incredible
ideas - such pathetic implementation - it's downright embarassing.
And now it looks like Sony has done it again. Someone should
just take those guys out into the parking lot and....
Sony
and the Connect Disconnect.
Of all the clueless participants in digital musics evolution,
Sony gets it less than anybody. Apparently fevered by its
dual role as a device designer and a big-five record label, the
company has demonstrated a toxic case of self-importance. Again and
again, Sony has attempted to persuade consumers that its proprietary
storage formats are somehow superior and more desirable than standard
formats. Sony seems to believe that we prefer limitations. The company
also seems to think its brand is worth something when it comes to
commodities such as memory and file formats.
Anyway, all this
is leading up to todays launch of Connect, a new
music-download service. Seamless integration with Sony
products is the promise. Which, of course, means seamless
exclusion from the products most people own. And the Sony product most
spotlighted by Connect? The musty, never-popular, proprietary
nightmare called the Sony MiniDisc. Leave it to Sony to attempt a disc
revival in a download store, and a proprietary disc format at
that!
More on Connect service features this week and next.

Sony Ericsson continues to make nice looking phones that I
have no desire to own. The W800 Walkman Phone
is nice enough looking, but the music application didn't seem very
advanced at all. Now I just played with it for a couple of minutes,
but I was expecting something more polished. Pressing the music button
takes you to the media player, but pressing it again doesn't play the
song. Neither does pushing in on the joystick. Instead, you have push
the stick to the right (at least I think; I had to rely on
visual feedback, which was sparse).
I'm happy to give it another shot in the future, but I was hoping
to get something that seemed more advanced than the average media
player application you can find on almost any modern phone.
