the mile of the century 08/07/2004 12:17 PM
the mile of the century Fifty years ago today, Roger Bannister, the first man to break the 4-minute mile, and John Landy, who beat his record a month-and-a-half later, squared off in Vancouver BC to determine who was the fastest runner in the history of the world, in what is arguably the most dramatic sporting event of the 20th Century. The record for the mile has gone down astonishingly through the years, but are there limits on how low it can go? (View video of the historic Bannister vs. Landy matchup here.

Raiding the 20th Century. On January 18 XFM Radio broadcast a DJ set by Strictly Kev (working under the pseudo-open moniker DJ Food) called Raiding the 20th Century - A History of the Cut Up. The set is completely comprised of music from the later half of, you guess it, the 20th century and makes for a very entertaining and nostalgic listen. File location details inside. 13th-century standards

13th-century standards 04/26/2004 08:53 AM
Traveling in France in 2001, I visited Chartres Cathedral and was lucky enough to show up in time for Malcolm Miller's lecture. Seemingly unchanged from the last time I'd seen him, in 1978, Miller again made the architecture and stained glass come alive in his inimitable way. This time, though, I heard something I hadn't the first time -- about standards. When the construction project drew in artisans from the 13th-century French countryside, the first order of business was to agree on standard weights and measures. I wonder what those negotiations were like! ...

American Idols of the Nineteenth Century

American Idols of the Nineteenth Century 04/23/2004 06:49 AM
"Your talent is so great that you can expect fruit and vegetables to be thrown at every performance." Long before William Hung haunted the American music scene, there were The Cherry Sisters, a Vaudeville act that people loved to hate. A review that read, in part, "Th e mouths opened like caverns, and sounds like the wailing of damned souls issued therefrom," so offended the sisters that they launched a lawsuit which resulted in an historic ruling regarding fair comment. Oscar Hammestein II proclaimed them "the worst act in the history of light entertainment." Alas, no recordings exist.

One of the true heroes of the twentieth
century

One of the true heroes of the twentieth
century
04/03/2005 12:48 PM
It's been a strange day. I haven't had the guts to turn on the television and see how the news is playing out there, but online newspaper reporters and webloggers have spent the day trading rumors, excitedly discussing the latest tidbit of information, and waiting. Waiting and watching as the thousands gather and pray. Waiting for the news of the final death of Karol Wojtyła, hanging in suspense as if this were the most important event in the world. I am not a Catholic, nor even a Christian, and death is to me as natural an event as waking up in the morning; but I am among the hundreds of millions mourning that Karol Wojtyła has breathed his last breath. While I disagreed with him, and while I consider the Catholic church to be an antiquated institution barely capable of coping with the modern world, I also recognize this fact: by choice or no, Karol Wojtyła was one of the great heroes of the Twentieth Century, and his legacy will not be forgotten by those to whom it mattered the most.

Cory Doctorow: Last night, the copyright debate of the young century was held when EFF Senior IP Attorney Fred von Lohmann and Siva Vaidhyanathan, author of the great copyfight book "The Anarchist in the Library," faced down reps from the RIAA, MPAA, Universal and Napster in a 3+ hour wrangle before an audience at Cornell University. Now the video is online -- well, it's available as a crappy, dropout-prone Real stream. No doubt there will shortly be ripped audio and video available. Real Video Link (via Copyfight)
