ISPs Mock Network Neutrality, Want To

ISPs Mock Network Neutrality, Want To
Block Your VoIP Usage
03/30/2005 05:20 PM
It looks like some ISP are just screaming out to be regulated. For the most part, the FCC has avoided mandating network neutrality because there was almost no evidence that ISPs were blocking or favoring certain traffic from competitive offerings. Well, not any more. While the FCC has alread y penalized one ISP for blocking Vonage traffic, the issue is getting a lot more attention since overhyped wireless ISP Clearwire proud ly joined the block brigade. What's surprising, though, is the amount of vocal support they appear to be getting from other ISPs. Broadband Reports points to an article quoting a few ISP representatives who come out in support of Clearwire, and claim that ISPs should have full control over what their users do on their lines -- and if that means blocking access to things like competitive VoIP, more power to them. It even includes some highly sarcastic comments from the president and CEO of the U.S. Internet Industry Association: "Oh, yes, we should run screaming to nanny government and get permission to stop Clearwire if we don't like what they do." These ISPs claim they're selling unlimited access to the internet -- and the value that they're selling are all of the applications and services that allows. Blocking certain applications is false advertising. If they want to sell access to their own private network with specific limitations, they should make that clear. If they're selling unlimited access to the internet, then they shouldn't be blocking usage.

NASA Fired Will Carpenter for writing a short story. "Some kind of harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment state, there's not much he can do about it. Is this story a valid means of self-expression or a harrassing glimpse into jilted anger? I've stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired for writing, and students expelled for writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

PATRIOT Act Quietly Expanded 12/02/2003 12:56 AM
From the linked article: Congress approved a bill on Friday that expands the reach of the Patriot Act, reduces oversight of the FBI and intelligence agencies and, according to critics shifts the balance of power away from the legislature and the courts. A provision of an intelligence spending bill will expand the power of the FBI to subpoena business documents and transactions from a broader range of business -- everything from libraries to travel agencies to eBay -- without first seeking approval from a judge.

Creative Quietly Launches New Zen

Creative Quietly Launches New Zen 03/22/2005 04:45 PM

creative_newzen.jpgCreative is apparently launching a new Zen, a full-size version of the Zen Micro, with a 20GB hard drive. Other than the size and capacity increase, it appears to be exactly the same. If you like the Zen Micro—and it's a pretty decent player, for sure—then you might be excited. The playback time is a little skimpy at 11 hours, but we'll manage.

There's no talk of price or color information, but I'd be surprised if Creative, after all the SKUs they've added to stores lately with the 4/5/6GB Zen Micros, would be reticent to add another dozen or so.

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches 12/17/2003 08:22 PM
You just can't stop Google, it seems. Last week they were adding features like the ability to track your FedEx packages, and now they've launched the beta test of their book search capabilities. While, this is clearly something of a response to Amazon's famed search inside the book feature, the end result isn't quite there. While there had been rumors that Google was looking to impleme nt a similar service, what they just (very quietly) launched is much simpler. Basically, they've just stored book flap info, and mixed it in with the regular search results (though, as the article points out, it doesn't show up that high on most searches). However, if you find one, it links to a page within Google that includes the info from the inside flap of the book, a few simple facts about the book and links to buy the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million (they haven't even added in pricing info yet). While they don't have affiliate codes to make money off of those links, I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to add. The page does have their typical contextual Adwords advertising, though - increasing their inventory.

VoIP Might Be

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.
