The USPTO has never provided the ability to download multiple page TIFF or PDF copies of patents/patent applications. Thankfully, a number of web sites and computer programs have stepped up to fill that void. This is an excellent blog posting that is updated regularly giving the needed resources. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

CNN is currently carrying an interesting interview with musician Peter Gabriel. Gabriel always seems to be at the bleeding edge of technology, and he describes two of his net music ventures, On Demand Distribution, a backend company that works on music payment and fulfillment systems, and his pet project with Brian Eno, The Magnificent Union of Digitally Downloading Artists.

When asked why he has embraced the internet while record companies have feared it, Gabriel says:

A new world is being created -- one is dying -- and if artists don't get involved, they're going to get screwed, like they usually do.

At the other end of the musician spectrum, indie rock artists The Mountain Goats recently gave their stamp of approval to the Internet Archive's hosting of their live shows. Frontman John Darnielle shares why he supports it:

I am totally in favor of tape trading, and file sharing never did anything wrong by me. People got into The Mountain Goats after downloading my stuff.

It's great to see a superstar like Peter Gabriel continue to embrace and extend technology and it's also great to see a small artist like The Mountain Goats realize new avenues to gain fans.

Knowledge Management: A Guide To Resources On the Internet by Michael M. Smith
http://snipurl.com/5i2z

Knowledge Management (KM) is one of many important topics being addressed by companies in today’s complex business environment. KM has spawned a new legion of consultants, it has provided a new direction for many software companies, and it has given purpose to many technologies that previously appeared to be only expensive executive toys. However, KM is nothing new. It is a synthesis of many ideas which when brought together create an exciting new paradigm of research. KM is multidisciplinary and draws from communications theory, organizational dynamics, and information organization. KM incorporates the concepts of Senge’s Learning Organization, builds on the foundation of intellectual capital management, and draws from business intelligence practices.

The underlying goal of KM is to use the knowledge embedded in the organization to maximize the effectiveness and competitiveness of the concern. This goal appears much too simple to have spawned such a massive movement. However, the current business environment requires new practices to accomplish this fundamental goal.

There are many excellent resources on the Internet addressing the many aspects of KM. The resources listed below offer a wide variety of information on KM provided by academic/research organizations, information portals, consultants, and governmental and nonprofit organizations. This has been added to Knowledge Discovery Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Kill a stupid Internet patent

Kill a stupid Internet patent 06/11/2004 05:34 PM
Got a favorite stupid Internet patent you want to see clobbered? EFF is running a patent-busting contest:
We're currently seeking nominations for ten patents that deserve to be revoked because they are invalid. Sadly, we don't have the resources to challenge every stupid patent out there. In order to qualify for our ten most-wanted list, a patent must be software or Internet-related and there must be a good reason to suspect that the patent claims are invalid. We're especially interested in patents that target tools of free expression, such as streaming media, blogging tools, and voice over IP (VoIP) technology. Most importantly, the patent-holder must be aggressively enforcing its patent and suing (or threatening to sue) alleged infringers. We're particularly interested in cases where the patent-holder is trying to force small businesses, individuals, nonprofits, and consumers to pay licensing fees. Deadline to enter is June 23.

On June 30, the Patent Busting Project's team of tough lawyers and brainy geeks will announce the contest winners – or losers, depending on how you look at it. And that's when the real fight for great justice begins. We'll be needing your help to research prior art for each patent and offer your technical expertise or historical knowledge. Using a legal process called "reexamination," the Patent Busting Project will ultimately go to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and attempt to take those bad patents off the books.

This is not a technical how-to book. It is a concise, lucidly written guide to business strategies, targeted at the so-called “geeks” who comprise a significant portion of the web development workforce. Author, Bob Schmidt is an advertising industry veteran, with over two decades experience, who has bridged the gap to online marketing and development.
