USPTO has never provided the ability to download multiple page TIFF or
PDF copies of patents/patent applications. Thankfully, a number of web
sites and computer programs have stepped up to fill that void. This is
an excellent blog posting that is updated regularly giving the needed
resources. This has been added to the tools section of

Patent Office Agrees To Check Into All
That Prior Art On The Eolas Patent
11/12/2003 01:35 PMThe latest in the Eolas patent saga is that someone at the Patent
Office has
finally agreed to
review the patent based on stacks and stacks of prior art that
people have been finding. Amazingly, the Patent Office appears to
have responded quickly (though, they don't say how long it will take
for a new decision on the patent) to the requests for a re-examination
of the patent. There's a quote from the USPTO's deputy commissioner
for patent examination policy saying that this was an "extraordinary
situation" which necessitated the quick response. The problem with
this statement is that it's
not an extraordinary situation. In
fact, it's an increasingly common situation, where silly patents are
getting the stamp of approval every day - and then used to hold other
companies up for extortion, rather than for encouraging innovation.

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent
07/08/2004 05:05 PMI think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid
patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is
that Adobe, who is no stranger to
abusing
intellectual property rules, is now being hit
with a patent over their
PDF technology. The patent is for
a method of extracting network
information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're
basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and
having the system not only download the page in question, but all
locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful
system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well
before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with
PDF files.

Sigh.
Engineers are working on software to load every photo you take, every
letter you write - in fact your every memory and experience - into a
surrogate brain that never forgets anything, New Scientist can reveal
It is part of a curious venture dubbed the MyLifeBits project, in
which engineers at Microsoft's Media Presence lab in San Francisco are
aiming to build multimedia databases that chronicle people's life
events and make them searchable. "Imagine being able to run a
Google-like search on your life," says Gordon Bell, one of the
developers. [ Go ]
David Gelertner is a Yale computer scientist with a commercial company
who makes software for this. He calls it life streams or time streams
(and I forget the url; sorry).

“At first, nobody bought Chester Carlson’s strange
idea. But trillions of documents later, his invention is the biggest
thing in printing since Gutenburg. One of the most significant
inventions of the 20th century was developed by an obscure
photographic-supply company founded in 1906 as the Haloid Company. It
is known today as the Xerox Corporation. In 1959, it introduced a
machine that made sharp, permanent copies on ordinary paper - a huge
breakthrough. The process,…

Free copies from Canon copiers
Free copies from Canon copiers
05/29/2004 08:05 AMOn Kuro5hin, a good how-to for hacking Canon copiers at copy-shops to
give you free copies -- and to get them to do fun stuff.
The copy machines you are using are configured in a certain way to use
a coin operated slot, key card, or service key (such as those that
Kinkos has). Through an interesting "feature" in the firmware, if the
copy machine is configured to accept coins or keys, and no machine is
hooked up for this, it will give copies for free. Unfortunately, this
isn't as helpful as it sounds; anyone with a remedial amount of
intelligence who wants to get free copies will try unplugging the
instrument first and foremost. As such, it is often impossible without
a service key to unplug the apparatus.
Fortunately, there is a work-around. Go into "Service Mode" (using
star-2 and 8-star), and push the "Option" tab. Underneath it, push
"Acc". A new menu will pop up. Hit the "Coin" button, and enter "0" on
the keypad. Once you are done, hit "Enter" or "Apply" (you MUST do
this after you change any field; otherwise it will reset the next
button you push). Once you are done, hit reset until you are on the
main screen. Voila - free copies!
