WorldCat

WorldCat 11/14/2003 08:02 AM
WorldCat®
http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/

WorldCat is a worldwide union catalog created and maintained collectively by more than 9,000 member institutions. With millions of online records ( 52 million and counting ) built from the bibliographic and ownership information of contributing libraries, it is the largest and most comprehensive database of its kind.

WorldCat is the foundation of many OCLC services that let your library process, manage and share information resources and let your users search for and obtain them.

WorldCat Goes Bookmarklet!

WorldCat Goes Bookmarklet! 09/24/2004 09:17 AM

worldcat bookmarklet - get it

"Thanks to Steven Cohen and Michael Fagan and Andrea Mercado [and me, and Michael and Andrew whose emails with similar code I didn't get til this morning], the WorldCat Lucky Bookmark lives! While I agree with Sarah that we can't expect our patrons to grok the bookmarklet thing, as much as we might like them to, this one is [nominally] for staff. Go nuts team!

Lucky 'Cat [in same window]
Lu cky 'Cat [in new window] " [librarian.net]

And as always, Jon Udell provides more help:

"I could have switched LibraryLookup over to this technique, but never did because it only works with Amazon. I've always liked the idea that LibraryLookup can also work with isbn.nu and All Consuming and other book sites. (It'd be cool if they all emulated Amazon's metadata pattern, but they don't.) Still, in the context of this excellent new WorldCat hack, I thought the non-ISBN-dependent solution might be useful. So here it is:

Amazon/Google/WorldCat bookmarklet: A/G/W (drag to linkbar) "

Most excellent - nice work, everyone! Another ringing endorsement for open, web services-based back-ends for library catalogs.

More on the Open WorldCat Project

More on the Open WorldCat Project 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

Kate points us to the Open WorldCat site for more information about the project (mentio ned here last week).

"The goal is to help libraries provide faster, more convenient service to current and potential users through familiar Web channels, and to point more people—even those who don't typically visit libraries—to library collections for the material they want. The pilot promotes the value and relevance of libraries on a scale far greater than any library or group could achieve alone....

OCLC will carefully evaluate feedback from pilot participants and focus groups as well as click-through statistics and other metrics to understand the pilot's strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the results will be considered in the light of the question, 'Does this help libraries and their users?'...

The Open WorldCat pilot is available to libraries that have contributed cataloging records and/or ownership information to WorldCat."

Further reading includes buildin g on a success, how it works, frequently asked questions, and how to get involved. It looks like libra ries have to manually opt out of the service, but I would argue that libraries should wait and see how the project goes before pulling their plug.

Unfortunately, we found that a Google search for " "da vinci code" libraries" didn't produce any WorldCat records in the first four pages. I know that makes us bad librarians for not reading further, but we're simulating patron usage. ;-) We also tried to use the example OCLC shows in their explanation for how it works, and we didn't come up with anything there, either, and that's adding the word "libraries" to the search. I guess we'll have to keep testing this to see when and how the records do appear in searches. If you come across searches that produce WorldCat results in Google, please me know!

Amazon/Google/WorldCat

Amazon/Google/WorldCat 09/23/2004 05:24 PM
The switched-on librarians have been having a bit of a hackfest today. Jessamyn West and Andrea Mercado got to wondering how to make use of the integration between Google and OCLC WorldCat ("a worldwide union catalog created and maintained collectively by more than 9,000 member institutions.") They discovered that if you construct a Google query using site:worldcatlibraries.org plus an ISBN, you'll find WorldCat records for the book. For example, this query returns this link, which is the WorldCat record for Bruce Schneier's Secrets and Lies. If you follow that link and fill in a ZIP code (WorldCat will remember it for you), you'll see all the nearby libraries that have the book, and you can check its availability at each library. ...

Library Lookup for Open WorldCat

Library Lookup for Open WorldCat
Project!
01/16/2004 11:28 AM

Matthew Eberle of Library Techlog returns to the blogosphere with a heckuva post:

Da Vinci Code

"Hi y'all. Just saw in Library Journal that OCLC is making some 2,000 records available through Google. This is very cool and the kind of teamwork Gary Price for one has been urging for a while. I've stuck this project together with John Udell's Library Lookup bookmarklet to get something that moves toward a universal library lookup.

Here's the OCLC WorldCat record you can find through Google for the Da Vinci Code.

Here's the S emi-universal Library Lookup that should go from Amazon to a Google search for WorldCat records." [Library Techlog]

In the immortal words of Keanu, "Whoa!" And it works quite nicely, thank you very much!

First OCLC Open WorldCat Record Appears in Google

"About a month ago ago ResourceShelf offered a few comments along with a link to Barbara Quint's excellent article about OCLC's relationship with Google. Quint's article broke the news that OCLC was supplying Google with about 1 million WorldCat bibliographic records for inclusion into the Google database.

Today, the first OCLC Open WorldCat record appeared in the Google database. It's a link to the bibliographic record (the record itself is not yet online) for Walter Isaacson's biography of Benjamin Franklin. A major questions was where a bib record would appear on a Google list of results. For many web searchers, if it's not in the first ten results then it's as good as not being there in the first place. A sad but true comment. Here are a few sample searches for Ben Franklin (combined with other terms) to see where the records appears. I attempted to create search strings like that of an average searcher.

Bad News Spreads like Wildfire

Bad News Spreads like Wildfire 09/02/2004 11:12 PM

Here's a perfect illustration of the need to track what's being said about your organization online:

  • Mustn't Text
"I can understand a place like a restaurant asking mobile phone talkers to step outside, or a place like a gymnasium asking mobile camera users to please not get strange, but a library threatening to fine people if they use text messaging... that I don't quite understand...?" [JD on MX]

  • Su rf City Libraries Gets Tough on Mobiles
"The new regulation, which comes into force from 15 September, means that if a phone rings, or if anyone is caught talking or texting, then they will face a stern warning. After the first ticking-off, though, library vistors can expect to receive fines of $250, $500 and $1,000 for repeated offences." [The Register -- in the U.K.!!!]

  • Use a Cell Phone in a Library, Pay $1,000
"City leaders of Huntington Beach California adopted an ordinance, which takes effect September 15, that bans all cell phone use in libraries, including talking, text messaging and ringing tones of any kind, reports The Associated Press." [textually.org]

And those links are just for starters (just wait until it hits Slashdot!). I feel bad for the Library because this seems to be mandated by the City (was it requested?), but can you imagine what teenagers must think of them for this? How many young librarians do you think will read that story and still want to work there?

I'm the first person to be annoyed by people talking on cell phones and the ringers, but there are far better compromises than this. After all, the press from the first $1,000 fine is not going to go well, and either it will be dismissed (removing the bite from the bark) or the Library will come out smelling quite badly. It would be far smarter to have a designated area for cell phone use, and it's ridiculous to ban text messaging as long as alerts are silent.

Instead, the Library is becoming the butt of jokes online. Do you think they know what's going on their permanent record?
