with thoughts of setting up a permanent home there, one new question
is paramount: does the Moon have water? Although none has been
definitely detected, recent evidence suggests that it's there.

07/02/2004 10:51 PM“As Cassini passed directly through a gap in Saturn’s
rings, it got the closest view any spacecraft has ever had of the
Ringed Planet. This image was taken after the spacecraft had passed
the ring plane, and was seeing it lit by the Sun. Cassini was only
195,000 kilometres (121,000 miles) above the rings when this picture
was taken. One interesting feature is the wavy edge of the inner ring;
this is caused by interactions with Saturn’s moon Pan, which
orbits in the middle of this gap.”

The Cassini-Huygens probe is approaching Saturn, and is nearly at the
end of its extremely long journey. It is already taking better
photographs than anything we've seen before, and much is expected from
both the orbiter and the Titan probe.
This picture is a simulation of what we might see, rendered with the

years in space, the $3.2 billion Cassini
robotic
spacecraft is due
to arrive at Saturn soon. Nasa will fire up
the engines to prepare Cassini for an orbital insertion on July
1st.
As early as June 11th, Cassini will zip past one of Saturn's outer
moons
Phoebe. Later in the middle of January, the
Huygens probe will be
dropped to study the atmosphere of Titan; another of Saturn's moons.
Some activists hated Cassini for being nuclear but it appears not
to have harmed anything much. Of
course, Nasa is yet again searching and hoping for life on other
celestial bodies,
but at least we've been getting some great pictures of the Ringed
World.
