Who Made Your Blank Discs?

Who Made Your Blank Discs?

Who Made Your Blank Discs? 03/19/2005 02:22 AM

You may think that you know what manufacturer made you blank CD or DVD discs, it was  Fujifilm, TDK Electronics, Ritek, Verbatim, Imation, Hewlett-Packard or another recognizable brand. You would be wrong.  In fact, most of this blank media is manufactured by a short list of companies: India's Moser Baer, Japan's Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden, and Taiwan's CMC Magnetics, Prodisc Technology and Optodisc Technology. The major name brands that actually create their own CD’s are Sony and Philips.

Of the manufacturers that actually make the media, Taiyo Yuden is the one recognized as the best, with the highest quality product. Trying to figure out who makes your media is not easy. The best website for talking about the brands and the media and what are some great deals for media online is Digitalfaq.com.

Here is more from the article on WiredSome media can burn reliably faster than its rated speed. A DVD+R might be rated at 4X burn speed, yet with certain recorders, it can be burned at 8X. The factors that contribute to high- or low-quality media are varied. Several choices are on the market, and which one is used can affect a disc's reflectivity, and thus its readability. But beyond that, says Pieper, "if your dye is unevenly spread, or the other materials and workmanship are shoddy, it doesn't matter what dye is used." Also, Pieper says if the glue job on the platter is sloppy, "the media literally falls apart."  Taiyo Yuden media stands as the golden child for blank-media enthusiasts. Popular opinion swings the other way for manufacturers such as CMC Magnetics and Princo.

Two blanks against the trend! The band has decided to make a statement for its fans and for music consumers in general and is releasing the album including a bonus DVD with 2 blank CD-Rs which have the same label as the CD itself. Alexx Wesselsky (singer and head of the group): "We are of the opinion that the music buyers are criminalized enough and have been made responsible for the wretched state in the music industry. We are giving them the chance to make 2 legal copies for private use with 'official blanks'. It can't always be that the end users have to take the blame for something that international corporations have arranged with their artist-burning methods."

Discs Are So Dead

Discs Are So Dead 04/05/2005 06:15 AM
Two new formats aim to bury the DVD, but web distribution will kill them all. By Robert Capps from Wired magazine.

If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?

If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next? 03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Wired Magazine is now suggesting that discs are dead as a storage medium. With all the battling going on over the next generation of DVD technology, Wired's products editor, Robert Capps, notes that not very many people seem to care about the new "high definition" audio CDs that have come out. Instead, everyone's focused on getting an iPod and digitizing their music. While video is definitely more difficult to transport via the internet, the argument is that the technology is improving for compressing and transmitting larger files. Of course, it might be interesting to put Capps in a debate with Mark Cuban -- who also thinks that discs are dead, but that portable hard drives or flash drives will take their place. Cuban's argument is that "storage is expanding far more quickly than upload or download speeds to our homes," so it's going to be more efficient to move around hard drives than bits of high definition content. With some already experimenting with offer ing content on iPods, it is beginning to look like this battle for the next plastic disc technology may be a waste of time. Update: Then again, some analysts think discs will be big business for the next five years. Of course, analysts always seem to be overly positive in their predictions -- it's what helps sell reports.

Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs?

Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs? 12/15/2003 03:16 PM
Microsoft's career page contains a very interesting job advertisement. The ad says that the Xbox Team "is looking for a strong PM/Engineer to manage the design and development of the Xbox Game Disc for the next generation Xbox console." Moreover, the ad stresses the importance of anti-piracy technology in the development of the new discs for the next generation console. Although it is possible that MS will simply try to incorporate sophisticated anti-piracy features in the now standard DVD medium, it is probably easier for them to develop a proprietary format. Nintendo did it with their GameCube discs, and they were quite effective in combating piracy -- so why not Microsoft?

Super-correcting DVD players make
pirated discs watchable
08/12/2004 11:21 AM
Jiangsu Shinco Electronic Group is a Chinese company that manufactures "super-correcting" DVD players that automatically correct for the low quality of pirated DVD discs (though the article doesn't say whether this corrects for bad pressing or bad recordings, I suspect it's the former). They get some of their parts from Sony!
Enter the caoqiang jiuchuo or "super-correcting" Chinese model of DVD player. Developed by the Jiangsu Shinco Electronic Group and selling for about half the cost of brands such as Philips and Sony, it is designed to cope with the poor quality of pirated video discs.

Along with half a dozen domestic brands that have followed its lead, the company's Shinco brand has grabbed about 80 per cent of the Chinese market. Its factories produce 5 million DVD players a year, and, says Zeng Ming, a management expert who has studied the company, its annual sales are about $US1 billion ($1.35 billion).

No Woman No Cry

No Woman No Cry 08/11/2004 10:45 PM

No Woman, No Cry.

« Plastic overlay on the sidewalk pedestrian signs that have recently appeared around town that turn the man into a rasta with dreads and chin tuft. I've seen a tiny version applied to smaller round-headed human figures, too. I call it 'No Woman. No Cry' since you never see a male and female stick figure together on one sign and it's only used on the males. They're cute. :) »

I spent the evening grumbling at my scanner and trying to resist the urge to hurl it out into the street just to watch it shatter into thousands of tiny pieces which would then get crushed under passing cars. I got the Prague photos scanned in without casualty though. It's an old, cheap scanner that has developed a haze under the glass and tends to colour the photos rather strangely. Aggravating. I suppose it's time to look around at the newer models and see if there isn't one around that won't leave me walking funny on the way out of the shop.

Oh, and summer left today after a viciously dark cloud blew in, blotted out the sun, and commenced pouring rain and hail in buckets. I'll admit that I wasn't enjoying the 28C weather with 90% humidity, but I'm not ready for October weather just yet. It's still humid only now it's 11C. Well, it was a nice week of warm weather while it lasted. Hrmph.
