measure how much a site "sucks," and great commentary like this:
I would assume that at some point, an actual person decided that a
hit counter wasn't enough, and that it needed to be an animated hit
counter that comically rolled at such a speed that it caused you to
imagine traffic so intense that the poor counter couldn't keep up. Oh

You Can Pay For Your Homework Online,
But Most Likely It Will Suck
04/07/2005 02:24 AMIn the last few years, one of the biggest issues that teachers and
professors have had to deal with is that many students are buying
papers off the internet. There are a number of tools, like Turnitin,
that try to catch students in the act, but now some are pointing out
that, students who buy papers online may get "rewarded" in another
way.
Most of the papers are just plain bad and won't get
the student a particularly good grade. Of course, this was hardly a
scientific study. It was just one professor checking out a few
different essays available online. However, it still makes you wonder
what sort of person would buy a paper online when there's absolutely
no way to judge the quality of it? Oh, right, the sort of person who
buys a paper online probably is too clueless to recognize that quality
might matter.

Why registration-sites suck
Why registration-sites suck
07/20/2004 06:15 AMWired News has a good piece on the backlash against the growing trend
of news-sites requiring logins to read their articles, covering
automated tools like the Mozilla bugmenot plugin that automatically
spoofs your logins to 14,000+ sites.
The point that everyone seems to miss is that no one can possibly keep
track of a thousand passwords for a thousand websites, which means
that these sites undoubtably contain recycled passwords (admonishments
from security experts to never recycle a password are the infosec
equivalent of telling people to "eat less and exercise more" --
simplistic doctrine that is vanishingly unlikely to be adhered to in
the field).
The more you recycle a password, the higher the likelihood that you
will use it in a sensitive context -- a bank site, a message board, an
IM client, an auction site -- where someone might impersonate you or
even commit identity theft crimes against you.
What's even worse is that while these news-sites are willing to spend
the computational cycles necessary to receive your password, none that
I've seen use SSL for their login, which means that the NYT and others
demand that you send your password in the clear when you sit down at a
WiFi cafe and want to read the password. This is a potential disaster
if that NYT password is also a sensitive one somewhere else: it's a
case of really callous disregard for user privacy and security.

Just as with software, these restrictions will almost certainly be
selectively enforced against reverse engineers, would-be competitors,

suck
01/23/2004 02:20 PMDo those MSN SPOT watches stand a chance? Mobile data pundit Alan
Reiter says (
this) (
and this),
summarized by BB reader John Troyer:
- They're big and ugly
- They need to be recharged daily
- They crash and sometimes die when shocked with static
electricity
- They have to be turned off on planes
- Coverage is spotty compared to pagers and mobile phones
- News blurbs are 25-word useless snippets
- You have to tell MSN when and where you are traveling for it to
work away from your home area!
- Nobody's *ever* made money selling generic headlines, weather and
sports via wireless.
Reiter also says:
"However, syncing with MS Outlook is useful, and Reiter
does believe they could catch on if Microsoft repositions to emphasize
the fun aspects: downloadable watch faces, games, etc. ... [The
watches] look as if they were designed by the Borg, on a very bad day.
Many years ago Motorola introduced its first pager watch, I was there.
I was pretty excited about the product. But when I spoke with a
Motorola executive, he said the company wasn't sure whether the target
market would view the device as a smallest, sexiest pager or as the
world's ugliest watch. Unfortunately for Motorola, the view was the
latter. Pager watches have generally died quick or lingering deaths.
But the operative word is "death."

I am about to dump GoDaddy as a host!
I am about to dump GoDaddy as a host!
04/11/2005 05:35 PMI am about as pissed off as one can get at this moment. You know I
upgraded and moved the hosting for this domain from a shared host to a
virtual dedicated box on GoDaddy.
This was primarily because of the terrible support I was having
over at infinology. I barely needed a virtual dedicated box, but
liked the flexibility that a configurable server would give me. I have
off-loaded nearly all of my podcast audio content to a third party
hosting service and only host the low traffic wma and ogg files on
this site.
So what am I all pissed about. This server has been crashing nearly
every night and I am about sick of it. My admin has done everything he
can do and yet it seems to crash about the same time every day. So I
figured it had to be something GoDaddy was doing. I sent off a message
to tech support and check out the reply I got.
----------- Quote -----------------
This is in response to your customer service inquiry regarding
geeknewscentral.com.
Your original inquiry was:
Server Keeps Crashing
We have researched the issues you raised in your inquiry and have
determined the following: This site is getting alot of hits. You may
wish to consider a dedicated server. Short of that, you may want to
try optimizing Apache, but that is only going to accomplish so much in
a virtual environment. If traffic to this site keeps trending upward,
then you will have little choice but to move to a dedicated box, in
the not too distant future. You may want to start planning for that
now.
---------- Left Name of the Tech off the Reply ---------
Sounds to me like instead of wanting to do something they are just
telling me I need to upgrade and pay more money. The only reason we
left the other shared hosting provider was because the customer
service was bad. I had plenty of spare bandwidth on the old host. The
shared host which I used to be on had nearly 1000 domains being
hosted on a single box it never missed a beat and was able to handle
the load that was put on it.
So I move a single domain plus some minor traffic domains to a
virtual dedicated server and it cannot handle the load of a single
site. Give me a break. You would think that on a shared server I would
have had more issues if what this tech says is true I should have been
killing the other 999 domains that were on that box. Give me a break
this is a excuse.
I have a substantial bandwidth allotment on this server and thus
far have not used anywhere near all of it in a given month. Plus I
think they are reporting bandwidth from the log files and not from the
switch so I think I am being cheated on my actual bandwidth usage.
Inquiries on how they measure bandwidth has went un answered.
So are these really techs answering my trouble tickets or are they
actually sales people.
The management at GoDaddy has been great when I have talked to
someone in charge the have bent over backwards. But their is a obvious
disconnect still going on over their.
If I am over using the service explain why and then tell me why a
shared server could handle the load just fine even with audio files
being served from it. Considering the daily traffic this site is
getting they box I am on should be more than enough.
I could put this site on one of GoDaddys shared host offload the
wma and ogg files to a secondary service and would probably not have
any issues but I guess the traffic that is coming to their site would
cause them to tell me to upgrade to a VDS. Personally I am sick of it
and will probably start shopping for a new provider again. How come
these companies cannot live up to their part of the bargain.
If they don't want people using the bandwidth they offer with the
package then they should change the package and explain in detail what
they allow on the box. I hate excuses and I hate companies that
oversell a product.
