Snip from Brian Braiker's July 12 Newsweek article (Link):
In February the Marines signed a $1.1 million contract for the
devices; the I Marine Expeditionary Force took them to Fallujah and
the Navy's Fifth Fleet has them in the Persian Gulf. (McSweeney didn't
know if they'd been used.) Miami, Los Angeles, the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, and the Department of Homeland Security are
considering purchases. With protestors coming to New York and Boston
for the conventions, might we see the first domestic use this summer?
Gruenler hints: "All I can say is there are cities you would
recognize."
And, this from an August 30 AP story from Ellen Simon (
Link):
Earlier this month, the New York Police Department showed off a
machine called the Long Range Acoustic Device, developed for the
military and capable of blasting at an earsplitting 150 decibels -- as
loud as a firecracker, a jet engine taking off or artillery fire at
500 feet, according to the Noise Center at the League for the Hard of
Hearing. The NYPD said it would use the machine to direct crowds to
safety if there's a terrorist attack or remind protesters where
they're allowed to march. Police said they wouldn't use the
earsplitting screeching noise feature at the convention. "It's only to
communicate in large crowds," Inspector Thomas Graham of the police
department's crowd control unit said.
Update 2: Image from indymedia said to be

is shown mounted atop police car.

If you're the type
who dreads being dragged kicking and screaming into the use of a cell
phone, Samsung sells their Long Range Cordless Phone. With an
incredible (for landlines) 30-mile range, the set includes a caller
ID-capable LCD and is able to communicate with the base-station,
acting as an intercom. It includes a car charger and an outdoor
antenna with 50 feet of cable that could very well violate my
Homeowner's Association's CC&Rs. Either way, if you want to use your
landline anywhere in town (mountains and buildings aside) without a
cell phone account, this $300 option from Samsung is one to
consider.

My new favorite cordless phone: Uniden
EZI996
04/11/2005 05:12 PMMark Frauenfelder:

I don't think I've ever
had a cordless phone I really like. The 2.4 GHz models interfere with
my Wi-Fi setup, and 5.8 GHz phones are a scam, if you ask me, because
they can't penetrate walls as well as phones that use lower
frequencies. For this reason, I always use 900 MHz phones.
But there's a problem that all cordless phones share, no matter
what frequency they use: low volume. I'm not hard of hearing, but I
often have difficulty understanding a caller. I don't have a
low-volume problem with corded phones, especially the old Bell Labs
rotary phones, which were designed and tested by the world's greatest
acoustic experts.
I went to Fry's on Friday to pick up some blank DVD's and I ended
up walking down the phone aisle, just to see what they were selling.
One phone immediately stood out, because it was white and had a big
red light on it: the Uniden EZI996 900 MHz Cordless Phone. It's
designed for the visually or hearing impaired. It cost $40. It has a
volume boost switch on the handset, as well as an adjustable volume
control. I bought it.
It's the best cordless phone I've ever used. You can crank the
volume way up. The sound quality is great. I also like the fact that
it's white and has the blinking red light, because it's easy to find
when it's ringing. The display is large-type, which is useful whether
or not your vision is impaired.
All phones should be so well designed.

Since I was cursed with stubby fingers, texting's always
been a pain. So you can be sure I'll be scrambling to land one of the
first SCH-a890s, equipped with voice-recognition technology. Still, I
guess I shouldn't get too excited--so-called QuickPhrase only
recognizes a list of pre-programmed sayings, like "Will call you
later." But I'm guessing it won't take long for them to offer firmware
upgrades that greatly expand the number of phrases. I give it 6 months
before the SCH-a890 can understand such SMS standbys as "Sorry, baby,
but I was out drinking with Rob and lost my house keys." If I had a
nickel for every time I've sent that note...
