This article in Forbes about the work between Apple and Motorola to produce what has (inevitably) become referred to as an 'iPhone' has re-ignited speculation about the degree to which the team-up will be just a simple outlet for iTunes music or a full-fledged move by Apple into the mobile phone market. Nothing in the article implies that Apple has had a hand in designing the user interface or the look of the phone itself, so it's really up in the air until more information is unveiled (possibly at the upcoming MacWorld in January). Some on Slashdot have wondered if the obviously flash memory-based phones are in fact the rumored iPod Flash itself. Unlikely, considering all the noise to the contrary coming out of Apple the last few months, but possible. Assuming the phone (or phones!) and the iPod Flash are two distinct products, Jobs might be reticent to unveil both at the same time, fearing that one might take the shine off the other.

Who knows? The one thing everyone should do, though, is not panic. This isn't new news, and until Apple and Moto decide to show us what they're cooking up (or gadget gods willing, someone leaks it), it's probably best to assume that this is Apple dipping their iTunes toes into the water and seeing how it works out.

According to the eWeek article the phone that was demonstrated by a Motorola executive at an International Consumer Electronics Show keynote is the first of many Motorola devices that will support iTunes this year. Details on the phone itself are still unclear but it is believed that it syncs with a computer and the iTunes Music Store like an iPod does, and incorporates the iPod interface for navigating and playing digital music.

Motorola has cleared things up regarding the ROKR's absence at CeBIT and why they pulled their plans to announce the iTunes phone at the last second. Apparently, it stems simply from the differing product launch philosophies of the two companies. Motorola likes to show its products off before a launch whereas "Steve's perspective is that you launch a product on Sunday and sell it on Monday," says Ron Garriques, Motorla's mobile phone division president. The initial speculation that the troubles stemmed from the urging of one or more wireless carriers was quickly put to bed by Ron, saying "I've got lots of carriers fighting to be the first one we go with." It seems that we're just going to have to wait for Apple and Motorola to simply surprise us one day, apparently, this summer.

Motorola and Apple have announced a mobile iTunes music player that will allow Motorola's upcoming 'always with you' handsets to play music purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Although the number of songs will be limited to the flash memory storage space inside the phones, most units should be able to hold a few dozen songs, at least, making them the missing piece in Apple's music playback device plan. iPod and iPod mini for those that want a dedicated, large-capacity music device; iTunes phones for those who just need a few songs here and there.

When the service launches in the first half of 2005, songs will be transferred from PCs to phones via the standard USB or Bluetooth interfaces, but hopefully later versions of iTunes Mobile will be able to download over the airwaves. And does this mean that Motorola has decided MP3s are the ringtones of the future? That's going to make some people (read: carriers) a little pissy, especially considering an iTunes download is cheaper than most ringtones.

Mobile-Review has a breakdown of the new Motorola V3 "Razor" phone, an almost all-metal clamshell that surprisingly doesn't forego a lot of features to reach its tiny size. Similar in function to the v600, the titanium-clad V3 is still fairly wide, but manages to remain less than 14mm thin in profile even with lots of built-in features (like Bluetooth).

To launch this September between $650 and $750, this spiritual successor to the StarTac is yet another hot phone from Motorola that manages to waltz into a crowded phone market and instantly make its own segment. It may be small, but I expect sales of the V3 to be big (I can't believe I just wrote that).

Motorola has announced a CDMA version of the massively popular V3 RAZR, which means either Sprint or Verizon users should be expecting the phone at some point in the near future. Engadget played with the new model at CTIA and noticed it has a 1-megapixel camera, instead of the GSM RAZR's skimpy VGA sensor, which is good news for late adopters, I guess. Sadly, none of the new Motorola phones are quite as impressive as the RAZR. I was really hoping the SLVR models, as thin as they are, were thinner.
