Free copies from Canon copiers
Free copies from Canon copiers
05/29/2004 08:05 AMOn Kuro5hin, a good how-to for hacking Canon copiers at copy-shops to
give you free copies -- and to get them to do fun stuff.
The copy machines you are using are configured in a certain way to use
a coin operated slot, key card, or service key (such as those that
Kinkos has). Through an interesting "feature" in the firmware, if the
copy machine is configured to accept coins or keys, and no machine is
hooked up for this, it will give copies for free. Unfortunately, this
isn't as helpful as it sounds; anyone with a remedial amount of
intelligence who wants to get free copies will try unplugging the
instrument first and foremost. As such, it is often impossible without
a service key to unplug the apparatus.
Fortunately, there is a work-around. Go into "Service Mode" (using
star-2 and 8-star), and push the "Option" tab. Underneath it, push
"Acc". A new menu will pop up. Hit the "Coin" button, and enter "0" on
the keypad. Once you are done, hit "Enter" or "Apply" (you MUST do
this after you change any field; otherwise it will reset the next
button you push). Once you are done, hit reset until you are on the
main screen. Voila - free copies!

Fun Stuff to Copiers
05/29/2004 12:17 AMThis article will give insight into the inner workings of Canon
copiers, and show you how to exploit a curious oversight that allows
for free copies. The material in this article is restricted to Canon
copiers only, as I have had the most experience in them; however, this
is not as narrow as you might imagine. Generally, Canon copiers are
seen second in quality only to Xerox in the market; thus, many
big-time copy shops and corporations use Canon copiers. This article
will not analyze the philosophical questions of doing anything it
demonstrates. Obviously, everything outlined is of dubious morality;
if you are not that type of person, see this as an educational article
demonstrating how the inner-workings of a copier works. I take
absolutely no responsibility for anything anyone does with this
information. (Remember: information wants to be free [as in beer])

WirelessUnleashed Launches
06/04/2004 09:08 AMEarlier this week, with a little help from my friends, I launched a
WirelessUnleashed, a group
weblog on unlicensed wireless issues. Between getting this
online and
Supernova
planning, I've been so busy that I neglected to post a pointer
here!
The site focuses on the benefits of reallocating low-frequency
wireless
capacity from broadcasting to unlicensed applications, both here and
around the world. There is a huge amount of capacity which could
be used for two-way applications like broadband to the home, but which
is locked up in broadcast allocations based on 1950s technology.
Freeing it up could create massive opportunities for innovation, and
could dramatically lower the costs of wireless connectivity in
developing countries.
My co-conspirators are Clay Shirky, Andrew Odlyzko, and David
Isenberg.
It's not often you find the brainpower that these three bring to the
table in one place.

MyGoogle launches
06/06/2005 12:13 AMAnd so it finally begins. The Portal Wars 2.0.
I hate to take credit for coining the phrase, but it's been so
obvious - for years - that this was going to happen that I didn't even
mark down when I first used the
phrase. That 2004 link refers to a reference I made in some blog
post a couple of years before - but I haven't tracked that one down -
yet.
Obviously the folks at Yahoo are
gloating over this one.

If you look at the initial set of offerings, it pales to MyYahoo -
but hey, they've had a nine year headstart. Each of the Google
offerings are real meaty, substatntive services, while MOST of the
Yahoo services seem pale and staid in comparison (and certainly
dated.)
But Yahoo can't go out and start buying all these new kind of
services - all over again? Or can they? Flickr and ODDpost are nice
starts.
But shouldn't these next generation portals (we call them DLAs) be
leveraging the islands of functionality independently evolving on
their own - like de.licio.us, webjay and buzznet? Shouldn't a next
generation portal provide incredible rich media interfaces (otherwise
known as Ajax or Laszlo?) Shouldn't a next generation portal provide
ways for ALL OF US to make money?
Well we at ourmedia.org certainly think so.
And all of our clients (who have been keeping me so busy I haven't
been able to blog) think so - too!
And needless to say Yahoo, Google and Microsoft (notice I'm not
even including has-been AOL) don't have a monopoly on DLAs.
What about MTV, EMI or NBC? Or IBM, BEA or Oracle?
Can't this new portal things blow up so huge that we all can
connect our digital IDs to MULTIPLE of these DLAs and smile? Isn't
that what it's all about - making the humans happy?
Looking back on Excite@Home - we can now just chuckle how badly
they blew it. To me - the SBC-Yahoo relationship has it right. Each
partner bring their ex[pertise to the table and provide VALUE to the
humans.
Stuff they pay for.
And so Google finally moves into a new categry - portals - which
Yahoo has owned for years.
Now we get to see what open stgandards they build on - and where
the data silos, propreitary barriers and old school thinking
prevail.
DLAs are based upon the notion of a web of islands, meshed together
by open standards. Those standards become the causeways and bridges
between the islands.
So DLA vendors don't have to go off and buy services - they just
need to support the islands open APIs and schemas welcome them to the
marketplace. And facilitate open conversations.
If I was going to predict - I'll say that Yahoo will lead the way
with Media and Groups standards - while Google will support open
standards around Events and Topics.
I just hope EVDB goes along.

AT&T Wireless Launches 3G, But Why?
AT&T Wireless Launches 3G, But Why?
07/20/2004 12:40 PMAs was entirely expected (and
leaked
last week) AT&T Wireless has now
launched their
UMTS 3G service in San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and Detroit.
The announcement also mentions that the service will be expanded to
San Diego and Dallas by the end of the year. This is a bit curious,
as those two cities were in the original list of four cities that AT&T
Wireless named last year, but which (for no clear reason) were dropped
from the list earlier this year. There still seems to be some
confusion about whether or not AT&T Wireless was really required to do
this as part of their deal with DoCoMo or not. Some have said that
deal was no longer an issue since Cingular had agreed to buy out
DoCoMo's share of AT&T Wireless. Still, it seems odd that AT&T
Wireless has decided to launch this offering now. If the Cingular
deal is really going to be completed this fall, why bother spending a
couple months marketing the AT&T Wireless 3G service, only to have to
rebrand it three months from now? Some are now saying that AT&T
Wireless launching this service now might be an indication that the
merger is a bit shakier than has been publicly stated. If the merger
doesn't go through, they would still need to launch, since Cingular
wouldn't bail them out from the DoCoMo agreement. Also, by launching
earlier, they would have a head start on any 3G competition from
Cingular. It still seems likely that the deal will go through, but
this early announcement and unclear status of the DoCoMo clause is
raising some eyebrows.

Micro Devices this week expanded its lineup of mobile Athlon 64-bit

We
tend to stay away from software and service websites, but OurMedia.org
looks to have a lot of promise and we'd like to point it out. The
concept is simple: upload any media, under a variety of open licenses,
to be archived and stored, for free, forever. That means you could
host your podcasts and images and homemade whatever on their servers,
as long as you're willing for the rest of the world to see them.
Definitely a project to keep an eye on. If nothing else, it's a
one-stop shop to load up all these media gadgets.
