AMD Offers a Sneak Peek at Pacifica
AMD Offers a Sneak Peek at Pacifica
03/30/2005 05:19 PMAdvanced Micro Devices has offered its first peek at
"Pacifica," its virtualization technology for use on server
and desktop processors, ahead of the April launch of the Pacifica
specifications. The technology is designed to allow multiple operating
systems and applications to run in independent partitions on a single
processor, turning one computer system into multiple
"virtual" systems, AMD says in a statement.
Pacifica is not due to be rolled out in the AMD product line until
2006, but it was presented to virtualization ISVs (independent
software vendors) and analysts for the first time at the AMD
Reviewer's Day in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday. Both AMD and rival
Intel are aiming to extend the use of virtualization technology from
mainframes and high-end servers to x86-based servers, desktops, and
mobile computers.

MacMice GarageKey USB MIDI Keyboard
07/30/2004 07:07 AM
Jack Campbell of
MacMice has announced a new 37-key USB MIDI keyboard called
'GarageKey,' designed specifically for use with Apple iLife '04's
GarageBand software. For $130, there are probably more full-featured
Casios or Yahamas with MIDI output -- and really, MIDI output is
pretty much MIDI output on something like this, although MIDI-over-USB
is potentially more convenient for many -- but the GarageKey does have
the benefit of being a decent size to fit on your desk.
I wonder, though, did MacMice really build the GarageKey as they
say, or did they license it from another manufacturer? Because some people have been taking
them to task lately for claiming to be the sole inventors of products
that turn out to be rebrands. Nothing wrong with rebranding, mind you,
but saying you built it might be stretching a bit.

04/15/2005 12:48 AMJohn
Darnielle writes about the fatally self-destructive temptation for
artists to respond to bad reviews online:
|   |
...if you're smart, you'll realize that the best way to preserve your
honor is to keep your mouth shut and let others share their opinions
of your work. They don't like it? They hate it, and want to say so
publicly? Well! Welcome to public life! If you don't like it, there
are plenty of dishwashing jobs available! If you're all that angry,
arrange for your label not to send them promos in the future. But
pissing matches with the guy who wrote the review? Ones in which, God
save us all, the dreaded "that's only your opinion!"
last-gasp-of-a-defense card is played? Can we just not, please? Can we
be a little more grown-up about things? |
